Re: NYC High Line Park
I got back last week and enjoyed my time there. The park was great. Tons of shops and really nice (and expensive) apartment buildings along the route that are connected to it. The last time I was down in that area was maybe 10 years ago and it was...not nice. Amazing re-gentrification of the area.

Re: NYC High Line Park
The A,C,E and 1,2 subway routes are 2 blocks east. And the NJ PATH goes to 23rd and 7th not too far away. I think there is already reasonable public transit nearby. And yes, it was an abandoned freight line so you would have had to re-do it anyway to make it the same kind of infrastructure to run th...

NYC High Line Park
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15208873 Here's the park's website. http://www.thehighline.org/ Very clever. It's makes good use of existing space, gets people to walk through the neighborhood. My guess is it might have been more cost-effective than tearing the old structure down. That par...

Re: Larry Beasley on Vancouver, density, and aesthetics
I just went to Vancouver a couple weeks ago. I thought it was great. Regarding density, Canada is willing to invest in pulbic infrastructure and people will want to live near that which means developers will build more buildings on/near it. The other is that the ocean and mountains sort of physicall...

50 Reasons Why Sydney Is #1
Saw this today. http://www.cnngo.com/sydney/life/50-reasons-why-sydneys-best-city-world-291350 Some of the items are a different take on what I've heard. But he does make it sound like a cool place. Legal drugs, hot women, great cheap food, beach, hookers...sounds awesome. Some of the more conservat...

Re: Little ideas for a big city
@Peas&Corn: I think AtD is talking about the countdown (you need to watch the entire video to see it). I saw those over in California also (they countdown not the animation). Not sure that they actually make crossing safer. They intrigued me so I waited near the corner of Harbor Blvd and Disney...

Re: Ian Smith: It's a shame Adelaide is crumbling.
Aren't you guys ranked in the top 10 best cities in the world? I think it was #8 last time I checked. Obviously you're doing something right. Maybe it could be more international, I don't know. What I do know is that I can't go three damn feet in a store without coming across a bottle of wine from t...

Re: Portland, home of the TOD
As a US citizen, Portland is widely regarded as a great place to live. But that's if you have the money. Home prices are expensive, taxes are high, and there's been a big push to expand the boundary of development. I know a couple of folks that live out there and they actually live across the river ...

http://www.gatewayparkworcester.com/Images/Templates/Gateway/photo3.jpg In my old hometown outside of Boston they built a nice mixed-use biotech complex with funds from the local univerisity and the local government. The concept is to integrate the two - the university and local area will combine t...

Re: Food Thread
That's interesting. Tom Colicchio is really, really famous in America due to the huge success of his show Top Chef. http://www.bravotv.com/top-chef http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Colicchio Absolutely. And he has credibility unlike Gordon Ramsay who just known here for theatrics (who, BTW, is host...

Re: Only in Adelaide? Hardly!
Here's an article in my local paper about our trolley system. A little background - we built one leg of a light rail system with a 1/2 cent sales tax increase and a lot of federal funding. We're working through getting some more fed money to pay for two more legs and coming up with the rest of the c...

Re: Does the State have a plan for a 2nd "major population h
As someone looking at this from overseas, I'd like them to start with the state and the national government talking with each other. I get emails to remind me to apply, videos about migrating to SA and stuff...and the link to apply is shut down until further notice. Getting a state sponsored visa is...

Re: Adelaide a homeport for cruise ships?
One of the options my wife and I looked at was a cruise in Australia when planning our vacation. We looked at Royal Caribbean since we use them here in the US. Everything pretty much leaves out of Sydney and a number go to some of the islands and NZ in particular. A few go to ports in Cairns or Tasm...
