Second Southern Expressway on track for 2014

THIS image will raise hopes of frustrated South Australian motorists eager for the State Government's $407 million Southern Expressway duplication.

The project is due for completion by the middle of 2014, but southern suburbs residents are being offered the most detailed plans to date of the proposed development.

The Transport department will today host the first of many open days designed to educate the public about the construction schedule.

The open day will be held at the project site's O'Halloran Hill office on Majors Rd, and will offer information about bridge closures, noise-reduction strategies, expected bus routes and environmental impact plans.

Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said the open days were planned for anyone interested in the project, not just those who work or live nearby.

"The project team has been working hard with local community groups and also bus contractors to try to minimise disruption and have included measures such as not closing consecutive bridges during the rebuilding phase," he said.

"The . . . project is very exciting for southern commuters."

Open days will be held today from 4pm to 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 2pm at 3 Majors Rd.

those pictures are amazing - the traffic is going in BOTH DIRECTIONS at the same time! Who would have thought...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Gotta love the Liberals of old. 'Let's build a freeway down south! But.. who cares about funding it properly. Just have it run in one direction, and we're cool.'

that wasn't the thought process at all.

The reason SExy runs in one direction is for two reasons, according to Pat Conlon:

1. 'Due to the highly tidal nature of commuter traffic in the south...' and
2. '...the then Liberal Government's decision not to properly fund the expressway.'
Our state, our city, our future.

yes because Pat Conlon wouldn't want to manipulate the reasoning would he.

Don't get me wrong, it was a dumb idea, but at the time it was built the State was broke (well in perspective of the current situation perhaps not that bad)

The idea was the build an road that would take pressure of south road during peak our - with the prospect of duplication when the state had money.

well, from all reports they didn't exactly build it right the first time which has made duplication more difficult - we still probably can't afford it but after all this time it is an overdue piece of infrastructure.

Yes, the state is really in the poo. AAA credit rating, infrastructure projects going off everywhere, the worlds biggest mine signed off and low unemployment. Either you didnt live here in the 80's and early 90's when we really were in trouble or your crying wolf. Repeatedly saying that the sky is falling will not make it so.

Didn't you hear? The state is totally broke! Nobody's investing in property, construction or mining! That's why there's no government infrastructure projects in the works.

*cough*

State Government Finances are in a diabolical position - this is common knowledge in the sate. I'm not sure why you are quoting unemployment as we have the worst on the mainland? and it isn't like the position is unique to our state.

The infrastructure works are also being undertaken via debt in an environment of falling revenues which is driving the problems at hand.

I'm am not suggesting that they sky is falling, I am just pointing at the the states financial position is poor and declining a position which has been accepted by the current State Government treasurer and premier in the past.

see that projected debt level? $8B...the sate Bank collapse cost $5B so yes it is a worse financial position than when the State Bank collapsed

So yes the mine will be built, but it is not yet being built nor fully operational.

I would also like to point out that justifying a poor position with another poor position doesn't make that position a good one

Having unemployment at around 5.2% is low

Might want to take in to account inflation when calculating 80's debt level with todays.

Having a deficit is not necessarily a bad thing as indicated by us keeping a AAA credit rating

I give 0 credence to anything that is written in the Australia.

Diabolical situation

Queue recession, wait......... Depression. Only the Liberal Party can save us now.

That is what your saying isn’t it Waerick?

how the hell am I suggesting that? I wouldn't have faith in Redmond to do my family budget let alone the states finances.

perhaps you need to assess your political bias before judging others

You might consider that QLD is $84 billion in debt with a AA rating. (Next highest is NSW with, if I remember correctly, is $46 billion).Even with the mines, people are leaving the state in droves. THe farm is largely sold off as well. Could have something to do with the recent landslide victory of Liberal/national coalition - 80 seats out of 89 (incl. preferences)

WE are far better off.
