Grrr it does too. Oh well it wasn't a planned thing, I just decided to quickly grab out my phone whilst we were driving along South Road.

The sheer size of this is impressive in real life!

hi, i've been paying close attention to the south road upgrade/construction

i'm seeing after the elevated section is completed, the next phase is the northern connector, (federal government funding permitting)...and then the section between regency road and anzac highway will be looked at.

i understand this is currently in concept planning phase...

The State Government has started a detailed planning study to determine the best solution for the nine kilometre section of South Road between the South Road Superway currently under construction and completed Gallipoli Underpass.
This planning study work began in February 2011 and is expected to take two years to complete. When completed, the study will release a Project Assessment Report identifying a preferred option for a free flowing corridor from the north of Anzac Highway to Regency Park. The study will enable the State Government to make a submission for grants funding to the Australian Government, as South Road is part of the National Land Transport Network, and for consideration by Infrastructure Australia.
Community feedback is vital to the planning study. A range of issues need to be considered and information will be collected from the businesses, residents and communities that use this section of South Road. Community feedback will inform development of concepts for the efficient movement of people and goods during construction of the corridor and when this upgraded section of South Road is completed.
Consultation activities for community and stakeholder involvement will include:
individual interviews and meetings with key stakeholder groups
council briefings
website information, including feedback options
production and wide distribution of information about the study and seeking registrations of interest
localised media

Information gathered from the community, local council and stakeholders through consultation activities will help the project team understand the key issues and inform the Project Assessment Report.

So i'm wondering what are the likely solutions to this section? I have a close relative who lives along that section (a couple of house blocks back) and am a bit concerned about the impact.
For my part, i'm thinking the best solution would be to extend the elevated road as this would allow the ground level road to function as per normal when completed as local traffic still needs to access these suburbs. This should minimize the amount of widening necessary as well as impact on the existing buildings along that stretch of road. Also this elevated section should include some sort of sound wall shell to minimize traffic noise.

What are your thoughts? What solutions have already been proposed?

I think what we are most likely to get is more underpasses. The elevated bit they are building now is for freight transport. It is being built in Regency Park/Wingfield section of South Road because that areas is primarily industrial.
What they need to do is to limit access to South Road from side/back streets. Block them off.
The only access to South Road should be from other main roads, Torrens, Regency, etc.
I think that will go a long way to making it a proper non-stop north-south corridor.

What about all the driveways?

Tunnel would be the best but im not sure if we have the money any time soon. Widening looks like the most likely option which in my books would be an awful outcome.

exactly all the driveways...hence widening is not a solution and nor are underpasses if it is to become an expressway grade arterial road

tunnels and/or elevated is the only solution if that is that outcome otherwise it'll just be a main road at 60km with no stop lights/intersections...which would be a disaster for anyone trying to get onto the road

Can't say i agree with this. A 60km/h non-stop route would not be a disaster at all. On the contrary, it would allow travel from Bedford Park to Regency Road in approx 17 minutes, which, in my view, is quite acceptable, while still allowing organic growth along the route, without the downsides that freeway slashes bring to suburbs - apart from dividing suburbs (wrong side of the tracks mentality) they are ugly, loud, take up heaps of space, and that 17-minute trip will be reduced by only 8 minutes (at 110km/h), and that's only if you do the whole trip! If you're going from the southern suburbs to the city, it will only save 4 minutes! And look at what the inner western suburbs have to put up with for that 4 minutes! Totally not worth it if you can have a 60km'h non-stop road instead.

you forget about all the houses and businesses with driveways onto this road. if there is steady traffic running along it constantly with no lights you'll almost never be able to back onto this road
