From memory we got down to around 12000 only in the CBD in the bad old days when living in the city was not good. V encouraged to see so much high rise apartment dev't - years ago I thought this would NEVER take place.

David, congrats on receiving the John Legoe Award, 2012. 35 years of service to local government is longer than many in this forum have been alive!

The John Legoe Award honours the late Cr John Legoe, former President of the LGA. It recognises the personal and professional development of serving Councillors and their commitment and service to their communities.

Re. the Black Caviar event at Morphettville - what better/alternate parking options exist? and how many cars are expected. Just curious.

Council also agreed to parking on the south Park Lands for the Black Caviar event at Morphetville. I opposed this as a wrong use of Park Lands and on the basis that other more suitable options were readily available.

Also, can you please share more info re. the proposed Ellis Park Event Space.

Is the Rundle Street upgrade still going ahead. Last I heard it was to commence in April,. Given there are only a few days left and no action I am a bit concerned it's been postponed or scrapped?

I'm curious as to why there's parking in the parklands at all for an event down at Morphettville, considering it's 6kms away.

So that people can catch the tram to the races. Having Black Caviar racing at Morphetville is seen as a good thing for the state, so it doesn't matter if it is 6kms away. I guess you can compare it to footy busses taking fans to West Lakes, and warranting a car parking space 40kms away from AAMI Stadium.

who cares if the parklands are used for carparking for one off events, what other purpose do they serve apart from a few people and their dogs. most of the time,im sure we will see alot more of this once the football moves to adelaide oval as well, i can see bonython pk being used for carparking as well so people can catch trams unless the entertainment cntre has their proposed multi storey carpark built by then.

It's a cost/benefit issue. Cars damage the parklands and the ACC responds by spending time/cash to fix. I'm unsure if the cost charged for parking fully recoups these costs or not - it should be cost neutral at worst. In fact i'd like the ACC to make a profit by charging more for parking - push more people towards using PT for the whole trip.

A few answers............

- I am sure no one can seriously suggest that we should be using the Park Lands for car parking for any old event that crops up! I can't believe that an S-A poster would ever contemplate that. The damage to vegetation and turf as well as trees through root compaction is horrendous and needs to be resisted at all costs.

Parking for the Black Caviar event should never have been contemplated in the Park Lands given that there are many better places that could have been used. For example, the Show Grounds has acres of hard standing, then there is Torrens Parade Ground, many suburban shopping centres but perhaps best of all why not run sthe shuttle buses from the half-full city carparks which would at least bring people into the city before and after the event and then of course there is good old public transport i.e. the Tram, right past the door.

But no, some bright public servants saw the Park Lands as the easy, soft option and the chance for the Council ,through its UPark operation, to make a quick buck and to hell with the sensitivities of the Park Lands.

Incidentally, the Park Lands are used on a regular basis by thousands of people for all kinds of active and passive recreation (most of whom are not city dwellers) as well as regular events of all types. And what's wrong with being able to enjoy plain simple open space of which there is far too little left in greater metropolitan Adelaide. This notion that the Park lands is some kind of a waste land is a complete and baseless MYTH.

- The Rundle St upgrade was given the go-ahead at last Tuesday's Council meeting with just a few minor changes to add back some car parks and relocate some bike nodes. Work will be starting in the very near future and will be finished well before the Christmas trading period.

- Ellis Park design work is proceeding and plans should be presented to Council in May. There is money in the draft budget to build the infrastructure over financila years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. Cirque du Soleil will be staged there in late 2012 and I think a large music festival has been scheduled to go there too.

- Thanks Wayne for your congratulations; of my 35 + years in Local Government, 32 were as a member of Salisbury Council and the last 4 years on Adelaide Council. Two vastly different experiences!

with all due respect david i understand your point of view,however correct me if im wrong,but doesnt the mcg in melbourne have parking in the parklands every week and likewise so will the adelaide oval very shortly,and what about the royal adelaide show has it for over a week every year,bonython pk for the last 2 weeks for the circus, is it really that much of an issue,i dont see our counterparts in victoria complaining its all about utilizing our parklands for different events,no point in having parklands and treating them like a museum where people can only look but dont touch,im all for parklands but im all for supporting major events that bring exposure and entertainment.

And also why would the council be looking to spend so much money on ellis park when generally for years its been bonython pk which is generallly the place for circus,s and concerts ,it also now has a tram line directly out front of it wheras at ellis pk people have to park and walk such along way as generally its hard to find parks close.

just my opinion for whats its worth,i thought thats what this forum is for afterall.
