not car free, but calm traffic, increasingly ped/cyclist friendly, etc. It's obviously a balancing act. I see it as a sliding scale - we can get more aggressive with regards to reducing traffic as the city population increases and the city overall becomes more dynamic. Cutting back too quickly will adversely impact.

Have you examined the Rundle St master plan?

To Adelaide Alive who takes me to task on parking in the Park Lands let me make my position quite clear.

I support parking in the Park Lands when it is for an event being held in the Park Lands. The difference with the Black Caviar event was quite simply that the event was NOT in the Park Lands.

The sooner the powers that be understand that the Park Lands should not be seen as a cheap and easy fix for other peoples' problems, the better. The only exception to this rule is for the Royal Adelaide Show and the parking of cars in the adjacent south Park Lands is a long-standing arrengement which the Council continues to honour.

I am also strongly opposed to the Park lands roads being used for cheap (or free) all-day commuter parking,
This destroys the purpose of the green belt which was surely intended to create a physical and visual separation of the city from the suburbs.

Re Ellis Park, we have the chance to revert to an earlier plan and turn a degraded area into a purpose-built event space suitable for large gatherings such as music festivals and to put in the supporting infrastructure that activities such as circuses need. We also want to take the pressure off Bonython park and the East Park Lands which are being seriously degraded by too many events held too frequently thus not allowing time for the turf and the trees to have any real chance of reinststement between events.

Your point about the tram access to Bonython Park is a good one but we are hoping that eventually we will be able to have a railway station close to Ellis Park and there is ample room on the plateau west of Ellis Park for car parking.

Messenger News wrote:U2 had a worldwide hit in the 1980’s with Where The Streets Have No Name.

In Adelaide, it’s more a case of Where The Bridge Has No Name.

More than two years after the City Council held a competition for the public to name a new $1 million footbridge across the River Torrens, the bridge remains nameless.

More than 100 people suggested names for the 27m footbridge, which was built in 2010 near the Adelaide Zoo.

Suggestions included the Thomas Wilson Bridge, in honour of the city’s second mayor, and the William Jacob Bridge, named after one of Adelaide’s early surveyors.

But a staff report said the bridge-naming was an “outstanding matter” and staff were “considering the benefits” of giving the bridge European and Kaurna names.

Cr Michael Henningsen suggested the bridge be called the Sir Douglas Nicholls Bridge in honour of the state’s first indigenous governor.

“He was a great leader of his people who built bridges between the Aboriginal community and our European community,” Cr Henningsen said.

He said he was embarrassed the bridge remained unnamed, “because it makes people think the council does not follow things through. “I know the council is professional and dots the i’s and crosses the t’s but this gives the perception that we don’t.”

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the matter had “fallen off the radar” but there was now a “high probability” a suggestion lodged during the competition would be selected to name the bridge.

A report outlining naming options will be presented to the council in the next three months.

Oh God help us. I can just imagine the sort of pitiful people sitting at home thinking just that - the sort who iron their tea-towels and line up all the spoons in the drawer. Just pick something and be done with it. Bridge for Cocks. There you go.

Hi Everyone,

The Lord Mayor has asked that the following request for your support be passed on; I absolutely endorse the Lord Mayor's call for your support of Council's major initiatives which are out there for public comment.

Dear Friends,

Our Integrated Movement Strategy (IMS) is fantastic. It’s about moving from car dependency which induces more cars (which will result if the city becoming less appealing) to a focus on pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. Many of the ideas are very progressive and will make the city a much more attractive place to live and spend time. If you agree we need as many submissions as possible to help make our councillors (and staff) brave enough to be a part of this historical change.

Can you please take 5 minutes to make a submission (by the 21st May!) and get your networks to do the same – we need a community prepared to say yes to progress.

Vic Square is also on the table and council has $20 million in the budget. Our primary square is a national disgrace and the plan is fantastic. We need to make a start now and whilst it will take years to complete (and we will always chase funding) it will be there for generations to enjoy. Any submissions would be appreciated!

Stephen Yarwood
Lord Mayor

In addition to the two that Stephen has mentioned, I also draw your attention to our City Heritage DPA which is listing 77 key properties in the central part of the city and which needs your support, again via Picture Adelaide.

Did this the other day. As an ex-pat, I hope my views aren't dismissed because I no longer live in Adelaide. Still a passionate South Aussie and want to see the city thrive... will be back one day!

$140,000 grant for inner city ideas

http://5000plus.net.au/blogs/5000plus/a ... tions_2012

From AdelaideNow
ONE of the State Government's more unusual tenders closes on Tuesday: "Expressions of Interest for the Design of a Speculation".

Yes, that's right, a Speculation.

Grants totalling $140,000 will be split equally between seven successful applicants to the brief of helping shape the future of six areas in inner-Adelaide, with their finished "Speculations" to be presented on June 27.

The locations for the "Speculations" are: the perimeter around Victoria Square; a triangle of Kent Town; the O'Connell St, North Adelaide, corridor; City West opposite the new hospital; Grote St; and the parklands around the Torrens.

According to the tender documents, the purpose of the Speculations "is to imagine alternative, but realistic, future scenarios for inner-Adelaide that will give direction to all those who have a stake in, or jurisdiction over, the future of our city".

The applicants are being asked to provide a vision of possible improvements for the six locations, ranging from high density city housing to changing the facade of the Coles supermarket along Grote St.

The tender is being offered as part of the 5000+ design project, a joint initiative of the State Government and Adelaide City Council in association with seven neighbouring councils, for the "redesign, renewal and reactivation" of inner-Adelaide.

Since June 2011, 5000+ has been collecting ideas from design professionals, businesses, not-for-profit organisations, government agencies and academia, and is now investigating how these ideas could work.

"The Speculations should be grounded in the challenges of today, but look to the potential to transform the Adelaide of tomorrow," the tender document states.

"The project enables design-led thinking to lead the way in shaping the future of inner Adelaide and for robust discussion to reveal possibilities, rather than debate right or wrong. Speculation allows us to consider `what could we do?' rather than state `what should we do?'."

Project co-ordinator, architect Nick Tridente, said it was an innovative approach to generating ideas. "We are using this to test the methodology and core principles developed by the Integrated Planning Commission for the future integrated development of the city," he said.

"These will not be about firmly costed projects - they are about ideas for the future of the city."

Love it,

On one hand David advocates for cheap parking in the city and how fantastic it is and the very next paragraph he talks about public transport. If you want to get more people using public transport restict the number of spaces available and increase the price so P/T becomes competitive. Its not rocket surgery ........... or brain science for that matter!

did you not notice the cheaper parking is targeted at casual parkers? people who work in the city have to be there anyway so get them onto PT. Less cars at peak hour is a good thing. Giving casual parkers a better deal will encourage more people to use what the city has to offer. makes sense to me, or am i missing something?
