New buildings for Flinders

15 August 2006

In its 40th year Flinders has committed to the largest capital development since the initial period of building construction in the 1960s.

The Chancellor, Sir Eric Neal, announced the decision made by the University at its August meeting.

"This investment is essential for Flinders in order to maintain its high reputation for our educational programs and research," Sir Eric said.

"This is a very important development for the University. We will be spending over $40m on two new buildings. Substantial expansion of student numbers and research activities over the last five to ten years has created an urgent need for expanding our accommodation."

"After extensive work with the architects and other consultants, we have two excellent designs for these buildings which will result in significant enhancement of the appearance and facilities of our Bedford Park campus," the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anne Edwards said.

"Construction will start before the end of the year and the buildings will be completed by 2008."

The two buildings will be on the main campus: one is to be occupied by the School of Education and the other will house parts of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Education and Health are key areas for the University, which offers both undergraduate and postgraduate professional courses and has a number of significant areas of research expertise and industry and community partnerships in these fields.

New buildings under way

22 February 2007

Vice-Chancellor Anne Edwards "dug the dirt" on the University on February 22, donning a hard-hat and vest and operating an excavator to turn the first sod on a major new building project.

$45 million will be invested in two new buildings on the main campus: one for the School of Education and the other for Health Sciences.

"This is a very proud moment for the University," Professor Edwards said.

"It is the largest capital investment at Flinders since the initial period of construction in the 1960s."

Chancellor Sir Eric Neal AC, CVO, said the University had been steadily growing since the mid-1990s and, as a consequence, had experienced increasing pressure on space for both staff and students.

"We took a strategic view of this and assessed current and future needs," he said.

"The result of this forward thinking was not one, but two, new building projects, the benefits of which will flow through to the staff and students and represent a significant enhancement to both the appearance and facilities of our main campus."

Professor Edwards said the buildings - both five storeys high - would provide modern, flexible and efficient facilities well suited to the needs of today's education and research operations.

"They will provide the University with up-to-date facilities that have the capacity to meet or exceed demands over the next five to 10 years."

Sir Eric added: "Last year, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary with the theme: Treasure the Past - Shape the Future.

"Our plans to shape the future are coming to fruition in a very tangible way."

Construction, development and property company Hindmarsh is the principal contractor and builder for the project.

Unfortunately this is the only image I have been able to find:

The new buildings are very attractive and remind me a lot of the new Uni SA citywest buildings. When I go back to uni i'll see if I can get better images.

I go past the building site everyday (when Uni is on anyway) and so far they're still demolishing.

thanks for clearing that up for me.

I'm going back to uni next week and I'll take my camera with me. There's a few good images of the buildings in the medical library. I'll also take images of the construction site.

Thanks for the images Norman. I should go and have a look at the developments. I haven't been up to the main campus for months now.
