Did you seriously just compare the two? :wallbash:

the position its currently in and has currently occupied is most prominent
I don't care for moving it to another part of the square, its history is in the position it currently is

I've lived in Adelaide my whole life and I struggle to even picture what the statue looks like. Maybe if it were moved out of the middle of a busy road, more people could appreciate it up-close.

I'm with Splashmo.
Vaguely remember what it looks like, but couldn't tell you where within the square it is, nor could I possibly give less of a shit if it's moved.

Yes but perhaps you may have misunderstood the reason for the comparison, and i could have chosen any other square which commemorates a person or event all over the world. Trafalgar Square is obviously named for the battle of Trafalgar in which Horatio Nelson died. So obviously the landmark is important for the square because the pair go hand in hand.
I just mean that it makes sense to have a statue of Queen Victoria in Victoria Square... as with most similar places around the world; structures or landmarks related to the square would hold a prominent position.

Fair enough.

I've been in Victoria Square many times and have never stopped to look at the statue. It's stupid to think that people don't want the statue moved!

You guys should make an effort to go and have a look at it. A small part of it brings to mind the Janet Jackson / Justin Timberlake affair ...

Anyway, considering that for the past x years it has been survived unobtrusively in the middle of a busy major road, why would it need to be moved for a re-design of the square that will see this location get less vehicle traffic and more foot traffic?

Having said that, I don't care if they do move it, but I would like to see it retained in the square. What would a statue of a Tarndanyagga look like?
cheers,
Rhino

Another classic example of the toxic negativity that is weighing down our state. It stops us focussing on the positives, as we are fascinated with the negative, no matter how insignificant it may be. (like this example. That old man was just expressing his idea, as he is entitled to. He is not going to derail the project)

Furthermore, one would assume from such a comment that there are no monarchists in Sydney and Melbourne.....

I assume it is being moved so that when the center of the square is used as an event space there isn't a massive blind spot caused by it.

Why would the Advertiser even print this story? does overwhelming negativity sell newspapers? I'm a big believer in a free press safeguarding democracy, but I am 100% a lot more could be done if the whingers had to actually go to some sort of effort to get heir little coalitions against progress organised.
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

who says this is a coalition against progress?
this guy was merely expressing a valid point about this development and whilst I don't particularly care, i see a lot of sense in his viewpoint

its not even about being a monarchist or not, the square was named after Queen Victoria, like it or not, that is the history of the place. the statue is a significant part of that and it currently holds a prominent position.
i've worked in the city for a number of years too and i knew where that statue was unlike others here who never paid attention to it.

this town doesnt have a lot of history or a long history, but something needs to be preserved in its present form for future generations to appreciate.
what if they'd knocked down all the historic roman buildings in the 20th century and replaced them with glass and concrete apartments? Italy wouldnt be half the tourist destination it currently is.
