I'm not a fan of this development simply because it's development vs culture. You know I'm a pro-development person but development should boost culture whether that be a business culture, an alternative culture, a youth culture, whatever culture that is. If a development is in fact versing a culture, it shouldn't go ahead. This development is replacing The Jade Monkey which is a cultural hub for alternative people, it may look ugly now but it's the kind of building that doesn't need to be knocked down instead, it should be added on to. I don't know if it's possible to build this building over that but even if The Jade Monkey wins this case, I recon it should be done up with a significant amount of street art or something.

Oh this reprieve is awesome, so awesome! Not sure how much chance there is to save the building though. Fingers crossed.

BTW: I am not anti-development, but in this instance, being a 151 year old building, with a much frequented and loved live music venue, I felt the benefits of the preservation outweighted the benefits of the new hotel.

Why do the developers need to pull down the old structure, when the Rendezvous hotel on Waymouth street manages without having onsite parking? I dont really like the hotel design, but if they really must destroy the old structure then so be it, because it's not really that great a building either. It would be a shame to see Ibis give up on investing in Adelaide because of this. :roll:

Oh dear, I'm afraid I'm likely better 'sourced' than you on the subject, so please don't interject if you can't add to the thread. Something's fishy here...deleting threads...vested interests? :wink:

This one is about to commence construction but why is the costume shop still there? They don't even look like moving anytime soon...

THE 150-year-old bluestone building that housed The Jade Monkey live music venue was recommended for local heritage listing three years ago.

The City Messenger has been told The Jade Monkey building - which has been given demolition approval - was one of 250 buildings recommended for local heritage listing in a 2009 report prepared by independent consulting firm Donovan & Associates.
The confidential City of Adelaide Heritage Survey, commissioned by the City Council recommended 250 properties for local heritage listing, including the 1865 bluestone building on Twin St.
Seventy-seven of the 250 recommended properties are being considered for local heritage listing by Planning Minister John Rau.
The study followed a 1992 report, which recommended the former biscuit factory for townscape listing, a form of local heritage listing that recognised a building's contribution to a heritage streetscape.

The building has been given approval to be bulldozed to become a carpark for a $65 million, 17-storey hotel. However, the City Messenger this month reported the building had been put on the State Heritage register while a consultant undertook further investigations.
The Jade Monkey owner Zac Coligan, who closed the doors last month, hoped the reports would add weight to the retention argument.
"The fact it (listing) has been looked into before probably adds fuel to the fire that it is worth being saved," Mr Coligan said.
Concerned resident Dave Walsh, who last month lodged the application to have the building added to the State Heritage list, called on Planning Minister John Rau to grant it protection.
He said the building was Balfours' first bakery and also had a "long connection with the live music community" which gave it a "significant place in SA's cultural heritage".
Hines Property managing director James Hines, who owns the site, said he was not aware of either report.
"What we do know, is the building has never achieved local or State Heritage status and certainly was not encumbered by any such heritage listing when we obtained our planning approval," Mr Hines said.
A Planning Department spokeswoman did not address questions on why The Jade Monkey was not one of the 77 properties being considered for local heritage listing by Mr Rau.
"This is the fourth major study of the city resulting in local heritage listings undertaken and, in the normal course of events, one would expect there to be fewer properties nominated in successive reviews," the spokeswoman said.
A council spokeswoman said the property was rejected for townscape listing because the then-owner objected to the proposal.

THE State Government has stripped temporary heritage protection from the building that housed live music venue The Jade Monkey, paving the way for its demolition.

Conservation Minister Paul Caica today announced the 140-year-old Twin St property in the CBD had been removed from provisional placement on the South Australian Heritage Register.

Hines Property has demolition approval to make the site a car park for a $65 million, 17-storey hotel.

The building received a stay of execution last month when it was given interim protection while a consultant investigated its heritage value.

Mr Caica said the independent heritage assessment report found the site did not satisfy any of the criteria for permanent listing.

"Based on the advice of the South Australian Heritage Council and the independent heritage assessment report, in my view placing the building on the SA Heritage Register would be contrary to the public interest," he said.



"Accordingly, I directed the South Australian Heritage Council to remove this provisional entry."

Mr Caica said the hotel would contribute to the government's push for development to make the city more "vibrant".

"The development of a hotel like this will provide substantial economic benefits to the South Australian community, through increased investment in the local economy" he said.

"Removal of the building from the register ensures that the hotel development can proceed without any further delay."

Heritage advocate Dave Walsh had lodged an application in September to have the bluestone building given state protection.

He said it had housed a biscuit factory that quickly became part of the Balfour's empire and that alone gave it "significant heritage value".

"Here's the minister up on his high horse (saying) `I'll just take it off the list anyway'," Mr Walsh said.

"We can expect to see bulldozers down there very soon."

The building was one of 250 recommended for local heritage listing in a report commissioned by the City Council in 2009.

But it is not among 77 of those 250 sites Planning Minister John Rau is considering for local listing.

A 1992 report recommended the building for townscape listing, a form of local heritage listing that recognised a building's contribution to a heritage streetscape.

But the then-owner objected and the listing was not approved.

The Jade Monkey closed at the end of September

A major sore point for many members regarding this development was the loss of the Jade Monkey.

However, there is good news, as the Jade Monkey has found a new home. The Jade Monkey will soon open again at the old St. Paul's rectory at 142-160 Flinders Street.
