Cheers monotonehell - forgot about the Sandra Sully bit. Maybe it was 'the panel' who babbled incoherently at his Adelaide comment?

Speaking off Billy, his 1990s tour of Australia is being repeated on sunday nights on Channel Seven. Adelaide is still yet to be shown.

It's not the actual subject of the article, but nice to see Adelaide at no.4 on the list of South Pacific "destinations on the rise" -- with no mention of Sydney or Melbourne. Is that because they've already risen...?? :P

Aussie destinations getting their groove back

AUSTRALIAN destinations are fighting their way back into travellers' hearts.

Two Australian cities have made TripAdvisor’s list of the world’s top 10 up-and-coming destinations – those that have seen the greatest increase in positive traveller feedback and interest, year-on-year.

Perth made it to number five on the list – placing above Mexico City and Moscow. Hobart was ranked number seven on the list, a month after it received a similar nod from Lonely Planet.

The famous travel guidebook praised Hobart’s natural beauty and world-class MONA museum, saying: “Now is the time to discover what’s going on down there before the rest of the world catches on”.

Mexico was the only other country in the top 10 list by TripAdvisor to have more than one city listed.

Jean Ow-Yeong from TripAdvisor said the result was good news for the Australian tourism industry.

“It’s great to see two Australian destinations, Perth and Hobart, making it into the world list for Top 10 Destinations on the Rise,” she said.

“Not only is this list based on increasing traveller interest but also increasing positive feedback about the cities’ hotels, restaurants and things to do.”

The interesting thing with Hobart/Tassie is how they leverage their main asset - being vast areas of lush unspoiled natural beauty. But more interesting is how the Mona Museum has becoming synonymous with Hobart - in quite a short period of time. Just goes to show that the built environment, with the right marketing, can act as a big draw card.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Coming in at fourth in the South Pacific as a "destination on the rise" is not exceptional as we're still at the bottom of the smaller state capitals. Nevertheless getting mentioned is always positive. In general terms Adelaide is still an unknown quantity to most people abroad even after many big events (Formula One, Festival of Arts, Tour Down Under, etc.). If we were the first point of entry into the country it would probably be a lot, lot different.

New international connections, like Emirates for example, can only help us get there. Their promotion overseas in conjunction with Tourism Australia and SATC is all good. Hopefully more international carriers are around the corner. One from China and hopefully an Indian airline in the not too distant future should give us a boost. Only then we'll know if we've reached our pinnacle, because getting accolades in the anglophone or European press is not always important, but accolades coming from Asia are. It's a numbers game and the more we look to China, India and Asia in general, the better it will be for our future. My :2cents: worth... :D

Cheers

ADELAIDEANS love their city and are happier than their interstate counterparts after rating Adelaide the nation's most livable city for the second consecutive year.

The Federal Government's State of Australian Cities 2012 report, released yesterday, compiled current data to present a comprehensive snapshot of Australia's cities.

It revealed Adelaide was the country's most livable capital city, supporting research by the Property Council of Australia, which interviewed 5230 Australians.
