I thought so, I just wanted confirmation. I'm an overwhelmingly positive person so I don't see the attraction in relentlessly 'knocking' everything that is proposed for ADL as seems to happen. I think we need a Minister of STFU. Hi, are you "Ray of Rannistan" that wrote into the 'tiser what a disaster the tram line extention would be back in 2005.Nathan wrote:You answered your own question there.Kasey771 wrote:Why would the Advertiser even print this story? does overwhelming negativity sell newspapers?
Yes? good, I'm from the dept of STFU to tell you to pull your head in you idiot.
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

Mutt, I don't think we can compare an easily transposable 118 year old bronze statue with Roman ruins. Not trying to pick an argument but the square does have more than one history, including the first raising of the Aboriginal flag in Australia. I'm not black or particularly guilt-ridden, just mindful that Adelaide has played an important part in social reforms.

From the City Messenger:
Vic Sq development on the move
Council 1 Aug 12 @ 02:45pm by Chloe Kennedy
The City Council has signed off on stage one of its Victoria Square project, awarding the contract to a Melbourne and Adelaide-based urban design company.
Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL) will complete the $20.75 million first stage of the long-awaited project, which involves redeveloping the northern end of the square.
The company is responsible for the landscape and architecture of the Botanic Gardens masterplan and the Australian Gardens in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens.
They recently completed the UniSA Central Plaza and stage two of North Tce redevelopment, which included landscaping and the water feature in front of the museum.
The City Council did not go out for tender for stage one of the project, instead offering the contract to TCL following its completion of the Victoria Square masterplan.
The contract cost has been kept in confidence.
Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said TCL had done a great job of the North Tce redevelopment.
``As the designers of Victoria Square (the masterplan), they have an intimate knowledge of the design itself and the design philosophies surrounding the project,'' he said.
``They are a world class organisation on our door-step.
``We have every confidence they will be part of a great outcome.''
The first stage of the Victoria Square project includes a large event space and stage in the northern end of the square, a promenade, shaded walkways, furniture and landscaping.
An interactive water-play feature and an upgrade of the central roadway will also be included in the project.
TCL will complete its documentation process by November, with work to start in February next year.
Stage one is set to be finished by December 2013, after which construction will begin.
An Expression of Interests process for the construction phase of the project will open later this month.

disappointing that once again, local architects are overlooked in the process.
[COM] Re: PRO: Victoria Square Upgrade
No. TCL are co-located in Melbourne & Adelaide. TCL Co-Founder Kevin Taylor, a local Adelaidian architect (killed in a car accident late-2011 if i remember rightly), was a major contributor to the design, and i believe he even led the entire design team.Waewick wrote:disappointing that once again, local architects are overlooked in the process.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

TCL are an amazing design company. Don't knock them!

Toxic soil may delay Victoria Square's makeover
VICTORIA Square soil is at extreme risk of having been contaminated, which would have catastrophic consequences for its $24 million redevelopment.
A city council report has revealed the risk, however, the council has refused to detail which chemicals may have contaminated the square or what impact it would have on the planned redevelopment, which is set to start in February.
A report tabled at last week's committee meeting said the square was at extreme risk of contamination which might lead to "increased expenditure and delay" to the project and have "catastrophic" consequences.
It pointed to the 1950s tramline, which ran through the centre of the square, as the potential source of the contamination.

The Fountain has been fenced off. Any chance of this starting early?
[COM] Re: PRO: Victoria Square Upgrade
I'm going to ignore the 'toxic soil' with 'catastrophic consequences' shite.
Fences are a good sign? Assume it's too early for the Christmas tree to be going up (do they still do that?)
Here's hoping the fountain is on the move. Really looking forward to some sort of sign of progress on this... anything would be nice after the years of nothing.
