I think the next piece of art in the Mall to complement to pigs and further annoy some people should be a massive tumbleweed.

Seriously, I want the people saying the pigs are embarassaing to state why the pigs are embarrasing.

I genuinely want people to think about the following scenario.

If you were in Melbourne, at the Bourke Street Mall, and you were to come across a statue similar to the pigs, what would be your first thought? Would you think Melbourne is a backwater for having such a statue in their mall? If your genuine answer is no, then why are you so embarrassed by the pigs in our mall?

A relevant set of sculptors for the area I must say...

Wouldn't be able to fit it for all the people in the Mall. Where do people get the idea that the Mall is deserted? Do they only visit on 4am Monday morning?
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

:hilarious: It's just my opinion. Nothing wrong with that! Obviously if most people like it, it is going to stay.

I would still think the same thing! Embarrassing! And for a city that is in the top cities in the world(both Adelaide and Melboune), why not make something more interesting than a couple of pigs? And again, just my opinion. :D

having worked near both the Pigs & the malls ball, I can honestly say that the pigs are a bigger attraction. People find them funny, kids jump on them & everyone talks about them. They are different & they do their job.

So, would this be considered embarrassing then?

I love the Pigs sculpture in the Mall and so do many of our visitors (and residents). Every time I visit, they are being photographed, with and without kids scrambling over them.
I agree with James' observations. They are a big attraction.

Quirky sculptures, interesting street art and furniture, heritage items, lamp posts, signage (interpretation) ... all play a part in adding to the appeal and unique character of each place. Think about other places you have visited, photographed and remembered.

The Pigs are unique and much loved (but obviously not by everyone).

I'd be embarrassed at pigs in ANY mall!

In the town where I come from, there are similar statues in the main shopping street, but they're of elephants, not pigs. The elephants are of actual historic significance to that town (Bolton, England) and they certainly aren't depicted as eating rubbish out of bins!

Big difference in my opinion. It's embarrassing to think that tourists to Adelaide (if there were any) would be confronted with this sight in the cities main city meeting place.

Maybe move the Pigs to Elizabeth City Centre.?

Come on guys, I havn't heard of any tourist saying they think the pigs are there as a symbol of Adelaide, and if it where the case, I'm sure the adevertiser would be all over it... We really do take ourselves a bit seriously here in adelaide.

Seriously they're just art, the statue of David could be just as embarrassing to a nun but we don't think any less of it.

I like the pig sculptures, and pretty much any public art, even the ugly stuff because it gives people something to look at, talk about and take photos of, removing them would make the mall less interesting and would ruin the "meet by the pigs" meeting point. and I hope they make a statue for the xylophone guy who recently died someday in the near future, some statues or public art of the malls buskers would be great I think. :D

Was a joke! I like the pigs. Having said that tumbleweeds would work, realistic ones would look good and if other states are going to continue calling Adelaide a back water rather than get all sensitive about it we should take the piss out of ourselves that would shut them up :D You don't have to wait till Monday 4am to see it deserted, the mall is deserted after hours. What is open in the mall after hours? It's barely even use it as a thoroughfare. Obviously during trading hours it serves its purpose and is Adelaide's most popular strip.

Successful artwork is what gets people talking and we've been discussing it on the forum for about a page now.

My 2c. I love the pigs! Oink oink!

I love the Pigs too!
A Quick Google search came up with some snippets of interest (or not, depending on your attitude) about the Pigs.

The pigs have names.
Horatio (sitting), Oliver (bin), Truffles (standing), Augusta (trotting).
http://rundlemall.com.au/about/rundle-mall-pigs.shtml

The group of pigs collective name for the sculpture is "A Day Out", presumably ambling down the mall.
The Pigs sculpture was unveiled, July 1999. Sculptor is Marguerite Derricourt.
