[PRO] Westfield Marion
[PRO] Re: APP: Westfield Marion Expansion | $350m
I was there yesterday, and to my (untrained) eye it simply looked like they were renovating the stage/concert section in the central area. No sign of any other development at all that I could see...

They have demolished the centre stage and put in new lighting and decorative features along the ceilings in the ground floor malls adjacent David Jones and Myer. So far I haven't seen anything other than that but maybe more is planned?
[PRO] Re: APP: Westfield Marion Expansion | $350m
Once the upgrade of David jones to Myer is complete they can start moving retailers to allow for stage 1 of the expansion to start. stage 1 is new food court, 9 restaurants along diagonal road, multi level car park along diagonal road, standalone bowland, new Big W(though it was completely renovated 2 years ago). Once this is complete the new mall (stage 2) can start construction between David jones and where big w currently is.

Interesting Ben thanks.
So if there's going to be a new food court, where will it be and what will happen to the current food court?

Thanks for that Ben! Are they planning to do something to the exterior or at least the landscape like they planned to last time since it's not mentioned anywhere?

Whilst I think ideally a shopping centre should have some landscaping around it, I think Marion needs pretty much every bit of land on the site for either buildings or carparks. I don't think there's room left for landscaping now.

I think it's basically staying in the same spot just being greatly expanded out to Diagonal roadpushbutton wrote:Interesting Ben thanks.

Ok thanks. When it was expanded last time I thought it was massive, but I guess demand has outgrown its capacity now so more space will be good.

Last upgrade of the good court,, I could have sworn it had shrunk by about half.
It felt much larger to me when it first opened.

Project cost: $350,000,000
Estimated completion (stage one): 2014
A two-stage $350 million expansion of Westfield Marion is likely to start in late 2013.
The upgrade will add about 65 shops across two levels of mall, parallel to the existing malls.
A strip of 10 restaurants and cafes will face Diagonal Road and more than 1,000 extra parking spaces will be added in decks of up to three levels.
The plans have been approved by the City of Marion’s development assessment panel.
The expansion will be in two stages. The first stage, valued at $200 million and taking about a year to complete, will consist of ground-floor additions and about 650 car parks. Work is expected start in late 2013.
The second stage, valued at $150 million and to start in 2016-17, will include a new upper-level mall, expanded food court and about 400 car parks.

Not sure why you'd think that, but it definitely more than doubled in size last time!Vjkdigital wrote:Last upgrade of the good court,, I could have sworn it had shrunk by about half.

I hope they're going to improve the appearance of the centre and not just make it bigger.
[PRO] Re: APP: Westfield Marion Expansion | $350m
That is what I was thinking! But then again, it's the inside that counts more.pushbutton wrote:I hope they're going to improve the appearance of the centre and not just make it bigger.

So glad the food court is getting expanded, it's cramped, old and needs more food choice.
Finially I agree with something you've said.pushbutton wrote:I hope they're going to improve the appearance of the centre and not just make it bigger.

A bit of nostalgia... was scouring Flickr and came across this photo of Marion Shopping Centre during the 1970s.
