Oh dear, it looks badly designed, and I cant even see any station facilities, and 6 lifts and 6 stairs is overkill for such a small station. Need to bring in the railway station design teams from Sydney and Perth I think, because this is just rubbish.. But as a motorist it will be great. No more getting stuck in traffic while waiting for the trains to cross.

To be honest, I didnt think it looks too bad. 6 lifts? probably overkill. My only concern is that this station has better integration to the swim centre and westfield, maybe some shops in the strip of land along Diagonal Road adjacent to the station would create more of a connection. At least this station is well visible from the road and at that level, Westfield should be visible from the station and encourage more use of the train.

Function aside, as far as Adelaide train stations go, that is incredibly sexy.

New push for State Government to fund the Oaklands Park rail overpass

TRADERS and Marion Council have renewed their calls for the State Government to fund a $110 million overpass at the Oaklands Park rail crossing, saying the intersection's already chronic congestion will worsen once the Noarlunga line reopens.

They say more trains on the line will cause longer delays at the bottleneck once the electrified trains start plying the line in September.

The Transport Department has drawn up artists' impressions of the multi-million dollar rail overpass but has not committed any funding to build it.

Warradale Appliance Service co-owner John Howard said more trains on the line strengthened the push for an overpass.

"They'll need to build the overpass pretty soon because the traffic congestion is already ridiculous," Mr Howard said.

"It's only going to get worse."

Bernie Jones Cycles office manager Anne Suckling agreed.

"It's horrendous now ... it's a nightmare at that intersection," Ms Suckling said.

The Oaklands rail overpass in my opinion is a waste of money at this point in time, the rail overpass will be for the benefit of the road users only, and its construction will be very disruptive for the rail commuters, another 6-8 months of buses I guess? If road users want a faster trip, then simply avoid Diagonal rd. There is no level crossing at Marion Rd and it's only 2 min out of the way. That's the best thing about a car is that you can go which ever way you want. Dont like getting stuck in traffic at the Oaklands level crossing? then dont drive through it! It's different for people who use Torrens rd or Hawker st and have to cross the Gawler line which is going to have just as many trains plus lots of electric trains being towed because the main rail depot is on this line, plus all the extra freight trains, and there is no alternate route where you can go under or over the train line 2 min away. I believe the Torrens Rd crossing is a much higher priority for grade separation! But even better would be to put the $110m towards finishing the Gawler electrification!

Use Marion Road instead? Really, that's your solution? Marion road, particularly at peak times is pretty slow already. It would certainly be a lot more than a 2 minute detour to avoid that crossing and adding more traffic to Marion road would only make it's already bad situation worse. I avoid Marion road at all costs as the times I have had to drive it, it's been terrible.

I also doubt that there will be electric trains being towed on the Gawler line to get to the Rail Depot, they built a new depot at Seaford Meadows for them, there should not be any need for them to go anywhere else until other lines are electrified.

I don't doubt there is a need at Torrens Road, but there is also a need at Oaklands.

It also doesn't help at Oaklands that if you're coming down Morphett Road and stop for the lights and Diagonal Road traffic goes through and then a train comes, once the train has passed, Diagonal road gets the first green.
I've even been there when this happened and then another train came and Diagonal Road got the green light straight after. So that was 3 green lights and none for Morphett Road.
This, along with the fact that the station is so close to the crossing, so trains are going much slower while the boom gates are still being activated from the same distance away.
Looking forward to a free-flowing Adelaide!

Marion Mayor calls for funding in State Budget towards Oaklands Park rail overpass

MARION Mayor Felicity-ann Lewis is calling on the State Government to set aside money in its budget for an overpass at the Oaklands Park rail crossing.

Ms Lewis will today hand to the government a 5611-signature petition calling for a rail overpass at the corner of Morphett and Diagonal roads.

She will also ask for money to be allocated in the State Budget, to be announced on Thursday, towards the $110 million project.

The petition was started by Marion Council and has the support of Holdfast Bay Council.

In February, candidates from both major parties in Boothby told the Guardian Messenger the project was of great significance to the area.

The petition fell short of the 20,000 signatures the council had hoped to receive.

Ms Lewis said the community support for an overpass proved it was desperately needed.

"The crossing is a significant north-south transport route for region-wide small business and a solution would reduce waiting times at the intersection," Ms Lewis said.

Motorists have long complained about traffic congestion around the intersection resulting in waits of up to 30 minutes.

They fear the traffic congestion will worsen once the Noarlunga rail line reopens in September.

The Transport Department has drawn up artist's impressions of the rail overpass but has not committed any funding towards it.

In 2011, a $2 million government study found an overpass was needed to cope with the area's growth.

The Guardian Messenger is awaiting a response from the State Government.

If the government were on the ball they'd have funded it and had it complete by the re-opening of the Seaford line in September. It's just going to cause havoc if it's built now.

I agree this could have been much better timed, but I still think it should be done, with the distraction it will cause. I've enjoyed these last 6 months of being able to use Morphett Road and not have a lengthy delay at this crossing. And come September, I will avoid this crossing again.
Looking forward to a free-flowing Adelaide!

Surely the Mayor of Marion is not so stupid as to call on the State Government to fund the Oaklands overpass five days before the State Budget is handed down. If she wanted funding for the project she would have raised it six months ago, not now. The numbers havr already been crunched. Does she seriously think they will just pull a figure out of thin air and hand it to her constituency? If anything she has let them down by calling on it too late.

And as a resident of the Marion Council area, I'd be livid if they did anything to prolong the closure even more! But now might be a good time for a simpler improvement: widening of that section of Diagonal Road to add another northbound lane.

Would a full closure of the line be required for this, or could the construction of the overpass be achieved in a similar manner to the Tram overpass of South road? If I recall correctly, the trams were moved to the side of the construction area for the duration, but were able to continue running.

Sorry if someone has already mentioned this, but why was the overpass not created when the initial Oaklands Park station got it's redevelopment?

It just seems like a massive waste of millions of dollars?

I'm more than happy to see an overpass here, as the current set of two really close traffic lights and train crossing sucks ass, but I mean it seems so confusing!
