Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Southern Stand to be ready for the Ashes. Eastern Stand to be ready for AFL 2014. That's the proposed timetable, anyway.[Shuz] wrote:Sure looks like it Wayno - looks like the Southern Stand will be complete by October/November thereabouts. Ashes is in January right?
I'd guess maybe in about 50 years' time, give or take a few decades. Because the only way (politically) they'll ever be able to cut down the Moreton Bay Figs will be when they can say they're dead/dying.[Shuz] wrote:Only just really starting to comprehend the magnitude of this project. Surely they will do the Northern Stand within a couple ogle years of this current redevelopment finishing.

March Milestones
As the cricket season comes to an end, March will see a number of key activities starting to happen at Adelaide Oval.
Work will start on the large, single curved roof structure for the Southern Stand. This roof will become a unique feature of Adelaide’s skyline and one of the most visible elements of the stadium from the CBD.
Resurfacing of the Oval itself will also commence, with levelling to take place ahead of new turf being laid.

Love this photo by Clare Chapman.
Great contribution to the photographic record of the redevelopment as it progresses through various stages.

Could be sooner than you think. I think those Moreton Bay figs are now past their prime and some are looking a bit sparse of foliage. Most of these trees dotted around our parklands are dying as a result of the last drought, and suddenly the council after years of letting exotic trees just die are trying to revive them by watering and mulching them They have relaced many of then with mainly eucalypts, which oddly enough they now also irrigate. Too late for most of these figs, and the water table under Adelaide has dropped signifcantly in the last decade, so these trees are done for.

5 to 6 years ago when people started talking about at inner city stadium in Adelaide I didn't think
it would happen either.

I suppose the trees, irrespective of their health, are just one part of the equation. Firstly, you also have the small matter of a heritage-listed scoreboard. And then, of course, there is attendance. Unless the new Adelaide Oval is packed to the rafters several times per year, I can't see anyone successfully arguing that the capacity needs to be increased. We'll see.
In any case, I reckon this is going to look great and even most of the cricket purists will (eventually) begrudgingly agree.

If I remember correctly the heritage scoreboard was to be moved to Adelaide Oval No. 2 in the event that it needed to be relocated to make way for a Northern Grandstand.Maximus wrote:I suppose the trees, irrespective of their health, are just one part of the equation.
