Has a Northern Stand ever publicly been part of the plan? I know lots of people want it to complete the stadium feel but I thought part of the deal to get this past the SACA members was the retention of the scoreboard and Northern mound complete with the figs and Cathedral view. For my part, I am still unsure either way.I do agree though as Maximus points out, that unless it is packed out several times a year, it will be hard to justify the expense, and I'm not sure Adelaide really neads a 70000 seat stadium in the near future.[Shuz] wrote:If I remember correctly the heritage scoreboard was to be moved to Adelaide Oval No. 2 in the event that it needed to be relocated to make way for a Northern Grandstand.

From what I understand (and this is going back a long time) the design allows for the Northern Stand to be constructed, if and when it is required - the lights and other infrastructure are all designed for the Northern part.claybro wrote:Has a Northern Stand ever publicly been part of the plan? It will happen, it is just a matter of when.
[COM] Re: U/C: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment | 53,500 | $545m
for the northern stand to be built it would have get through the following;
1. Heritage listing of the score board.
2. Heritage listing of the fig trees.
3. removal of the northern mound which is an icon of the oval.
4. SACA members will more than likely vote against it.
5. public disapproval of removing the fig trees, score board and mound.
6. funding (SACA, SANFL, Government).
7. the need to increase the capacity higher than 53,500.
8. no government would touch this with a 10 foot pole.
to put it simply, I can't see it happening.

1. Ask the SCG about heritage listed score boards...
2. Fig Trees die.
3.not an issue as far as I can see.
4. agreed, will be interesting (will they get a choice)
5. as above, but this may change once people get annoyed at the gap.
6. agree
7. agree
8. tend to agree.
all things taken into account, I can see it happening, but not for a while.

3. Without the scoreboard and the figs it is just a cold wet mound.
4. Who cares.
5. See answers to 1,2 and 3.
6. Election year pork barrel
7. Port Adelaide start winning.
8. All the of the above.

haha yeah I know its tongue and cheek, I just think its a bit of joke that we're even entertaining the fact people are looking for an upgrade already, the current redevelopment isn't even complete yet!claybro wrote:1. I wouldn't want to change the hill anyway, a lot of people think it looks unfinished but I think it looks unique, and you gotta love the old score board and the hill. moving it would be a terrible mistake in my opinion. with the argument that the hill will be a mud bath in the winter, I doubt it. wet games wont attract anymore than 40,000 and thats being generous, and most of those people will be seated undercover or at the bars anyway. as a Port supporter, as much as I hate to say it, I can't see us out growing 53,500 capacity stadium anytime soon .
if we ever host a major event such as a Commonwealth Games or a FIFA World Cup game(s) just put temporary stands up. theres no point in knocking down an icon for an event that will last a month that we will never fill again.

I think next they should upgrade Memorial Drive, something on the lines of Queensland Tennis Centre, Melbourne Park maybe? Or maybe even the golf course But this is for another day and topic obviously
[COM] Re: U/C: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment | 53,500 | $545m
Totally agree. Enclose "The Drive", move the 36ers there and the odd concert, would really compliment the oval precinct.DaShyFreak wrote:I think next they should upgrade Memorial Drive, something on the lines of Queensland Tennis Centre, Melbourne Park maybe? no, Adelaide Oval #2 is behind the members stand. Games are only played now on that oval you linked to while Adelaide Oval #2 is out of action, it's current'y being resurfaced now, ready to be used again.
[COM] Re: U/C: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment | 53,500 | $545m
I agree that the Northern Stand probably wont be built for a long time.
I do however think that some kind of temporary stand just for the football season will used on part of the hill in years to come.
I remember sitting in the Edrich Stand next to the media centre at Lords and thinking that something similar of a temporary nature would probably eventuate before full scale development.

That oval behind the members' stand doesn't look particularly big, or have a grandstand of any description. I'm surprised it would rate as Adelaide Oval No 2.pafc1870 wrote:no, Adelaide Oval #2 is behind the members stand.
