Good lord, thank god that was quickly dismissed and not seriously considered.

Adelaide Oval footbridge construction to stop rowing on Torrens Lake
ROWING will be banned and the Torrens Lake will be closed when construction on the controversial new $40 million Adelaide Oval footbridge starts next week.
Rowing clubs will be disrupted as the Torrens is closed to east-west traffic for nine months from April, and the river level lowered by 400mm six times.
Rowing clubs intend to use West Lakes as an alternative, and say the exclusion zones on the riverbanks will impede coaching work even where boats are allowed to row.
From next week, fencing will be erected around the work zone on both sides of the river in preparation for early works including service relocation and preparation of the footings in the river and the north and south landing points.

Getting really tired of these articles... I can't wait until it's complete so we don't hear anymore.Rowing SA development officer Damien Derlique said rowing clubs would work around the disruptions.
"Coaching will be disturbed because people cannot use the riverbank which is our main problem," he said.
"Most clubs are now training at West Lakes and were aware this construction would cause disruptions."

Brad Crouch really doing a solid for the anti-bridge/progress brigade there. It even made it to the Tele's online site:

I think they've legit linked every single potential design proposal to the gallery. Great "journalism" by News Limited.

I understand that Rowing SA is quite happy with proceedings. The chairman of Rowing SA is Michael Eastaughffe, who is also asset manager for Land Management Corporation (trading as Renewal SA), so he's taken the rowing fraternity each step of the way. There's no 'business' to be compensated foir in the case of rowing.
The Festial Centre Bistro is to be compensated for loss of trade, despite it being gien additional office space, a new kitchen abnd dining area and a new plant room.
One business that is likely to suffer loss during the bridge building is Tony Shuman's Popeye operation. Rod Hokk has specifically ruled out compensation for the Popeye business, which will be restricted to the area from the City (King Wm Rd) Bridge to the Albert (Zoo) Bridge for the duration. The period of restriction has just been increased from 6 months to 9 months - until January 2014. Tony is not happy - and rightly so, imho.
Watch out for some media lobbying on this.

Riverbank Bridge
Preparatory work on the centre piece of Adelaide’s world-class Riverbank Precinct – the Riverbank Bridge - has commenced. This includes site establishment and service relocations.
Over the next few weeks further works will be undertaken such as preparation on the footings in the river at both the bridge’s north and south landing points.
To protect the safety of workers and the public, fencing will be erected around the work zone on both sides of the river.
Access to the Riverwalk (north of the Dunstan Playhouse) will be available until 17 March after which time users will be directed to the Riverbank Promenade and the Adelaide Festival Centre complex. On the northern side users of the shared path will also be detoured around the site.
Directional signage will be placed to explain these temporary access arrangements.
Thank you for your interest.

I'd like a condensed version better than the overly-safe design we ended up with.Matt wrote:http://bette.at/current/riverbankbridge/

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Amusing seeing that little protest against the footbridge over the Torrens led by the Liberal MP Rachel Sanderson and about 20-30 others holding signs at Parliament house
Who knows why the media gave them attention though, slow news day perhaps? I've seen more people doing a Harlem Shake FFS.

I think the Footbridge is a vital part of the upgrade of the Riverbank precinct, connecting the Adelaide Oval precinct to the southern side.
Liberal MP, Rachel Sanderson @AdelaideMP seems to like stirring up trouble/self-promotion and organizing "protests" eg against the Footbridge. This picture from @Mikeybee11 shows the small band of protesters (rent a crowd?) who turned up to her protest on the steps of Parliament House.

What is it with the MP for Adelaide (irrespective of party) like her predecessor Lomax-Smith, that they try to stymie progress in the city? They represent a small percentage of the SA population but our city caters to the needs of all SA residents and visitors to our state.
It reminds me of the kerfuffle and loud voices against the extension of the tramline, with gloomy predictions of waste and irrelevance. Well, look at how popular and successful this has been.
I look forward to the opening of the Footbridge.
Wonder if they will have some sort of celebratory event eg to raise funds for charity just prior to the official opening. I was fortunate to attend the celebratory charity event inside the Heysen Tunnels just before they were opened - great memory.
