Was constructed in that mis-guided era when we used to try to match a modern building,to the adjacent historic buildings but with a modern twist. It generally never really worked well. Much better the new westrn stand, that has remaining elements of the existing historic structure. Also like the old ticket booths in the front bar of the casino on North Terrace, genuine old structures, intertwined with the new developement.ml69 wrote: by ml69 » Fri Mar 08, 2013 8:00 pm

They only had a tiny budget for the stand and the state was still paying off the state bank at that stage.

The old Bradman Stand also retained the original brick archway structure of the former stand behind it so basically they tried to incorporate that into the new one. One of the reasons I guess it was only small?

The only similarity besides the red bricks, was the arches at the back of the stand which also featured on the old western side stand.Paulns wrote:The old Bradman Stand also retained the original brick archway structure of the former stand behind it so basically they tried to incorporate that into the new one. Some shots I took this morning of the recently felled area to make way for the new Pedestrian Bridge, Plaza location and construction of the Southern Stand. Their certainly making good progress!

Beginning of changes to Adelaide Oval's surface
TWENTY thousand square metres of reinforced surface and a $400,000 drop-in pitch transporter hold the key to the transformation of Adelaide Oval into a truly multipurpose year-round venue.
The $3.5 million transformation of the Oval's surface begins today as workers start removing sprinklers in preparation for developer Baulderstone to start flattening the Oval surface.
Victorian sporting turf specialist StrathAyr, which has worked on ANZ Stadium in Sydney and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, has won the contract to begin laying the new surface in June.
It will have a new drainage layer that allows for 100mm of rain, topped with a 600mm deep sandy layer and then the 50mm grass surface which will be supplied by a Langhorne Creek nursery.

Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.
