Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
There should be crossings at the ends of Austin St and Stephens Pl - a lot of people cross here dangerously.

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
Thanks again David. Completely agree about the Clipsal infrastructure, I ride through there every day on my way to work in Norwood and I must say it does not make the area very appealing to walkers and recreational users. The area has so much potential, wasted for as you say almost half a year.
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
Well if the council supported one major part of the Clipsal setup a few years ago, then maybe it wouldn't be a construction site for half the year.... #justsaying
It makes no illogical sense to continuously pull down the Clipsal building and again rebuild later in the year.

In response to Crawf I say that that hoary old argument is absolute claptrap!
The Pit Building is only one of about 40 structures that get built every year, one of which is the main seating stand which is opposite the Pit Building.
And then of course we would have a permanently-blighted Park with a building to be used only 4 days a year for the pleasure of a handful of people. And how long do you think it would it be before there would be 'events' held there on a regular basis, hectares of car-parking and all the service areas and other trappings that would go with it. No amount of vacuous appeals for something called vibrancy could ever justify doing that to what is arguably Adelaide's best asset - its ring of Park Lands. This Park is a park for the free and unrestricted use of the many people who live in the surrounding suburbs and the many others who come from far and wide to enjoy the recreational facilities that Victoria Park has to offer.
What we really need is a permanent structure on a dedicated race track at somewhere like Virginia or Malalla or perhaps Gilman.

I hear Melbourne's looking for a new race event...david wrote:In response to Crawf I say that that hoary old argument is absolute claptrap!

Let's not revisit the past people. We have pages and pages of it in the Victoria Park thread. I think every case has been put there. Go read it if you feel you need to revisit it.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

The clipsal race itself continues to grow in popularity, moving out of the city would impact so we can comfortably assume it's here to stay. That being the case I agree with David - it's not unreasonable to expect quicker setup/pull down timeframes.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Sorry appreciate your input David but the Clipsal 500 IS the Adelaide street circuit! Defeats the point completely if its held somewhere else.

Speaking of the Victoria Park is there an update available on how works are progressing with regards to getting all the playing fields etc done? This seems to have been going on for a very long time. Each time I go past it seems the same bits of dirt keep getting moved around by heavy machinery, not to mention it's amazing to see large parts of grass sown and then dug up again.
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
If there is any logic in the above it escapes me; first it says that it's not worth having a permanent structure for a few people for only 4 days a year. Point taken. But then it goes on to say that if it's built it'll bring events and it won't be long before it'll be used all the time and there'll be lots of problems with car-parking and everything else that follows...? Hello? NIMBY logic?david wrote:

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
Point well made Rebel-L. This is why I take the word of councillors like David and Anne Moran with a grant of salt. Both are guilty of hypocrisy and NIMBYism, and I for one, can't wait until both are voted out at the next council elections.

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
I fail to see how protecting the Park Lands for their original purposes of open recreational spaces for the general populace is in any way NIMBYISM. True I live near that Park but am I not as entitled to have a park as any body else?
And believe me, Victoria Park is used by many people whose backyards are a long way from this park and thenof course it is used for many other organised sports such as cycling, pedal-prix, 3 Day Event and so the list goes on. In addition the playing fields are used by the private schools for their sports programs.
Permanent buildings of the scale of the Pit Building have no place in the Park Lands and I will fight to preserve the Park Lands for the enjoyment of future generations. When the 30 Year Plan is fully implemented and there are another 200,000 people living in apartment towers, around the city rim, the Park Lands will be their only source of recreational space, a place to walk their dogs, grow their veggies and breathe clean air with perhaps a remaining glimpse of the Adelaide Hills.
I am quite prepared to be criticised in a constructive way but NIMBY? hypocritical? I don't think so!

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
The problem with the Parklands is that under the current policies and views of the certain members of the Council, Adelaide will never gain the critical mass required to ensure that the Parklands as a whole are a vibrant hive of activity for 12-16 hours of the day and be properly utilised for various uses, not just passive recreation. They are a Parklands for ALL South Australians, not just the select few thousand residents of the city and surrounds.
We have 7.6 square kilometres of Parklands, compared to 3.4 sq km for Central Park in New York City, more than ample amount of space. It is absurd that people like you are so hell bent on preserving every square inch possible, thus retaining entire swathes as nothing more than barren wasteslands. Honestly what is 500sqm of parkland sacrificed for a new grandstand/pit facility for horse racing, motor racing, conferences, a gymnasium, you name it, all active uses which will go a significantly long way to attracting more people to the Parklands, and acheiving the critical mass required to actually support and maintain the land it sits upon.
Half of it is currently a dustbowl, and not a pretty sight either, and the Adelaide City Council has the nerve to complain that they can't fund maintaining the land without sacrificing a little bit (such as Victoria Park in this instance) which had it been invested in, would have gone a long way towards revitalising an existing area and generating its own income, which in turn could have been used to mainatin and revitalise other areas of the Parklands also.
Honestly David, nobody cares about a view to the Adelaide Hills. If you want to see the Hills, go there. It is stupid views and comments like these, which unfortunately have now influenced the design outcome of the Rundle Mall redevelopment, and now here we are, wasting $30million dollars on demolishing everything down the middle, displacing small businesses and moving things 3m south, all in the namesake of preserving a view to the Hills. Nobody goes to Rundle Mall to look at the view to the Hills, they go to Rundle Mall to shop, entertain and eat. I agree Rundle Mall needed a bit of tidying up, but $30m is absolutely excessive, and the whole thing could have been done for $5-$10million dollars, tops. Such excessive expenditure now only adds to the debt of the Adelaide City Council, which in turn will have to be passed on to small businesses and rateholders through increased rates. Hardly an outstanding legacy to leave behind to those people who voted you in, is it?

The proposed building wouldn't of just been used for the Clipsal, but horse racing aswell. Though the good ol naysayers had to destroy another project which would of benefited the city economy, major national event and a sport that had been at Victoria Park since pretty much the foundation of Adelaide (long before any of them were born). That sport ofcourse is horse racing. Think about what city has a racetrack on it's doorstep?... it was Adelaide not too long ago, and if it stayed it could of brought more people to the city aka vibrancy.david wrote:I fail to see how protecting the Park Lands for their original purposes of open recreational spaces for the general populace is in any way NIMBYISM. The building could of also been used for functions, local events etc. Hell the plan even included more trees!
I know people are sick of hearing about Victoria Park, but the park should of been left for horse racing and this money allocated to create the 'world's greatest urban park' *cough* should of been put towards rejuvenating other areas of the parklands that are in far worst shape. Eg the southern parklands.
Why is this always brought up?. You can literary see the Adelaide Hills from most parts of Adelaide. It's hardly a unique thing.with perhaps a remaining glimpse of the Adelaide Hills.
