Barossa makes US mag’s global top 10
US-based Wine Enthusiast Magazine has listed the Barossa Valley in its top 10 wine destinations for 2014.
While the annual list is dominated by US destinations, the Barossa is the only Australian location to make the cut.
“Wines from the Barossa are Australia’s ambassadors, bringing the country’s sunny warmth to tables around the world,” the magazine says.
“The region itself is increasingly visited — a trend that’s sure to accelerate as Australia’s tourism campaign places greater emphasis on the country’s food and wine culture.”
The feature in the February 2014 edition suggests travellers stay overnight or longer to take advantage of the food and wine on offer.
“Lest one think of Barossa as red-wine-only country, remember that it includes not only the Barossa Valley, but also the higher-altitude Eden Valley, home to some of Australia’s best Rieslings.
“A young Eden Valley Riesling and a plate of Coffin Bay oysters is a terrific way to start a Barossa meal.”
The top 10 destinations listed by the magazine are:
1. The Aegean Islands, Greece
2. Villa de Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico
3. Tex Hill Country, USA
4. Mendoza, Argentina
5. Sonoma, California, USA
6. Baden, Germany
7. Barossa Valley, South Australia
8. Walla Walla, Washington USA
9. Languedoc, France
10. Umbria, Italy
