New event for August

Little Britain star Matt Lucas to headline new winter arts festival 'Word Adelaide'

'LITTLE Britain' comedian Matt Lucas will headline a new Adelaide festival "exploring the power of words'' to launch at venues across the city in August.

Announced today by Tourism Minister Leon Bignell, "Word Adelaide" will run from August 15 to 18 and feature a diverse program of spoken word, comedy and music events.

The festival's flagship event "In Their Own Words" will see Lucas appear at the Entertainment Centre with Australian comedian Kitty Flanagan, Emeritus Professor of language Roly Sussex and bass player Guy Pratt to "talk language, their lives and why words matter".

Pratt, who has played with Pink Floyd, Robert Palmer and Icehouse, will also join Spandau Ballet guitarist Gary Kemp at Her Majesty's Theatre for "Words Without Music", a discussion of the lyrics to their most famous songs.

The new winter festival will also feature a public soapbox competition judged by Australian comedian Joel Ozborn, poetry and short story reading at the State Library and a freestyle rap competition with a $10,000 prize to be held at Thebarton Theatre.

Developed by Events South Australia, a division of the South Australian Tourism Commission, Word Adelaide will be directed by Adelaide PR and event manager Jane Intini.

Mr Bignell said the new event would complement Adelaide's existing festival calendar.

"The Word Adelaide festival is focused on participation, and we would love to see as many people as possible getting involved," he said.

"August is fast approaching and we encourage everyone to spread the word: a new event is on its way."

Get on your soapbox, spin a yarn, or explore writing and song lyrics -- all will be part of a new festival in Adelaide.

Word Adelaide will be held in August at a range of venues and will explore the power of words.

Actor/comedian Matt Lucas, of Little Britain fame, will be in town for the festival, as will Gary Kemp of the band Spandau Ballet and Guy Pratt who has played in bands including Icehouse; they will discuss the lyrics of their best-known songs.

Others on the program will include professor of language Roly Sussex and comedian Kitty Flanagan.

There will be a rapping competition, as well as one for writing, public readings and Aboriginal storytelling.

Creative director Jane Intini hopes the event, a one-off at this stage, can establish a point of difference on the nation's festivals calendar.

"I think it's time for something different, everybody has music and comedy and writing and all these different things that go on ... nobody has a word festival," she said.

The Adelaide Tour (cycling) is being held for the first time this weekend. It's part of the National Road Series, which I suppose you could say is a bit like the Australian version of the ProTour. No well-known names competing, but these are the up-and-comers -- think the next Cadel Evans or Stuart O'Grady.

ORGANISERS of the Jarvis Subaru Adelaide Tour will investigate increasing the race to four stages and moving it to April to open the National Road Series next year.

Race management will speak to Cycling Australia about a possible date change despite hailing last weekend's inaugural tour a roaring success.

The three-day tour was won by SA team Euride Racing after it took the leader's jersey on the opening team time trial and successfully defended it during the road race and kermesse.

Race director Max Stevens said an additional stage next year was likely to be another road race and while riders were fortunate to have good weather on the weekend, an April timeslot would be even more reliable.

Good to see this inaugural Adelaide Tour leg do well and add to our reputation as a cycling friendly state. I can see their thinking re change of date to April. The chosen date will still be subject to the vagaries of change of season weather but that's cycling.

A free public event being held at the University of Adelaide on Tuesday 11 June will address some of the key issues impacting on the future of Australia's housing.

The forum raises significant social and economic questions about housing, with our ageing population, relentless suburban expansion and rising incidence of low-income "housing stress" all contributing to an increasingly uncertain quality of life.

Called Older. Poorer. Denser?, the forum is part of the University of Adelaide's Research Tuesdays free series of public seminars.

The event will address such issues as urban sprawl, high-density living, surging housing costs, the societal implications of homelessness, and the expectations of Baby Boomers for old-age accommodation.

The Free Orange Giveaway will kick off a 'Market Week' at the CM, which will include food events, Happy (foodie) Hours on Thursday and Friday (am), extended trading on Thurs and Fri, live entertainment and other activities.

The Free Orange Giveaway is part of 'MarketWeek', the brainchild of the new CEO, Claude Baxter whose resumé includes managing the South Melbourne Markets. The 'Market Week' event will be the first of many food and entertainment events at the Central Market.

"Market hours will be extended on Thursday and Saturday and we'll feature local bands, food trucks and wineries."

bands and roving performers.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find this whole 'rediscover Hindley' festival rather confused in its aims. I mean, why are we trying to promote Hindley Street as 'family friendly' destination? And also, why is a 'family friendly' event being used to promote the new small bars? Completely the wrong target audience!

Today kicks off with a giant bibimbap. Great weather, superb location!

A mini food and wine festival every Sunday commencing Jan 19th til the 23rd February on the Riverbank with a different theme every week.
Each Sunday will be a new adventure for your stomach’s pleasure alongside a popup bar featuring a mix of local blends and brews.

The Blue Hive is a new piece of infrastructure on the Riverbank that is part-shade, part-seating and part-play equipment for kids. It also has a cooling water mist for especially hot days.

At around 8:30 tonight all the restaurants around Rundle Street were winding down and looking to close. That was until the events in the area shut down and a throng of people descended. Now the restaurants are all full again with a second rush. I guess Mad 'March' has begun.
