I can just remember when the Supertrains (2000 Class Jumbo's) were delivered in the early 80's. They were considered so modern and advanced for Adelaide at the time.

These A-City (4000 Class) trains are a quantum leap over the 2000 & 3000 class and are going to look amazing when they are put into service!

And the whiners are out in force about the trains - they'll be overcrowded, why aren't the bigger (obviously never heard of coupling ), they weren't built in Adelaide, they'll be vandalised, they're going to sit and collect rust until next year (obviously didn't read the part about testing).

Some people need to engage their brain before writing crap like that.

I liked the comments about power outages and that they should have solar panels on the top

I feel like whining too. I mentioned this a long time ago about the exterior of these new carriages, about the corrugated side panels. I would like to know why they went for this design? Is it something intrinsic to Aussie trains? I would have thought this look to be passe, old fashioned. I would have also thought a smooth exterior to be more aerodynamic. One last thing, I wouldn't want to be the fellows removing graffiti off these should some buggers ever get the idea...oops!

PS. The outage thing is a sure possibility in summer. Should it happen it could mean a train being stuck a long way away from a station in 40 plus degree heat. Then imagine getting older and disable people off the carriages. Let's hope it never happens.

I believe the corrugated side panels are for greater strength for less weight, less framing needed. With regard to power outages, in a perfect world the power would be provided by a dedicated source, not just from the grid.

Umm....... you do realise that the feds only gave us money for the duplication of that line + other associated works in the last budget. That's what the new delay is about.

Snippet of news on Tonsley rail line closure/delay in re-opening the line.

A rail line closure in Adelaide's southern suburbs has been extended until November, so more track upgrade work can be done. The Tonsley line has been closed since January and was due to open again by September. But the South Australian Government has decided to keep the line closed for several extra weeks to allow its duplication as part of the Tonsley Park public transport project.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said bringing forward that work would be an advantage.

"Contractors are currently working on the rail line. If we don't bring the work forward what we'll see is a workforce of about 250 people laid off and brought back on later on when we want to reopen and redo the works on the line," he said.

Why did they need to close the Tonsley line in the first place.

The work for the convention centre, that required track space was completed by July last year.
