This coming Monday at the ACC DAP meeting, a 9 level student accomodation complex at 302-306 Waymouth Street will be granted planning approval.

The complex will contain 222 units, and ground floor retail and be 28m tall.

Although the reccomendation to the council is for them to approve it, there is a mention of the buildings "average material quality" and how "it does not exhibit a high design quality".

A few days ago a lodgement was made with the ACC by the University of Adelaide.

The project involves demolishing the current Mathematics Building (E10) on Frome Road, and replacing it with a new 8 level Engineering Building. The project is expected to cost $49 million.

This project however has been classified as Category 3 (non-complying).

$3.5 million for new engineering building

Federal Education Minister the Hon. Julie Bishop has today handed over a $3.5 million cheque to the University of Adelaide to contribute to a new engineering building, which is aimed at catering for the significant growth in students in Engineering, Computer & Mathematical Sciences.

Ms Bishop and Dr Andrew Southcott, the Federal Member for Boothby, presented the cheque to Vice-Chancellor and President Professor James McWha and Chancellor the Hon. John von Doussa QC during a visit to the University today.

The new $100 million engineering building is to be built on the site currently occupied by the Mathematics Building on the lower level of the North Terrace Campus.

"The eight-storey building will provide more than 11,000 square metres of space for learning, teaching, research, and other student and staff facilities," Professor McWha said.

"It will be a much-needed addition to our teaching facilities and our campus life. The building will allow the University to develop and grow, and will also improve the overall campus environment, with a three-storey atrium and other open spaces, and public art that will help to reinforce a sense of place and purpose," he said.

"The $3.5 million contribution from the Federal Government is extremely welcome, and will assist the University of Adelaide to remain at the forefront of teaching and research in engineering, computer science and mathematics."

The University's Faculty of Engineering, Computer & Mathematical Sciences currently has 2700 students enrolled, and is predicted to grow to 3400 students by 2011 - a growth of 37%.

"The unprecedented growth in the mining, technology and defence industries in Australia has created a high demand for quality graduates in engineering disciplines," Professor McWha said.

"This new building will help the University to play a key role in providing skilled graduates for South Australia, the nation and the world."

Work on the new building is expected to begin in early 2008.

Glad this building is being replaced because the Mathematics Building is a very ordinary and outdated facility. I use the Mathematics Building a fair bit and some of the rooms never get much if any use at all.

302-306 Waymouth st has been approved according to todays advertiser. Dont worry howie, i go my facts right this time :). Was a small render in the paper as well, the building is very bulky, but doesnt look too bad for cheap student accomodation.

Next week, the ACC DAP will approve plans to demolish a small industrial looking building at 264-266 Flinders Street, and to use the land to erect a new 6 level building comprising 31 units. The building will be known as SOHO and be intended for student accomodation. The building will feature retail at the ground floor. The building will be located next to Aqua Apartments. The building is designed by Loucas Zahos Architects.

I found this image of the redevelopment of the old credit union building at 70-72 Light Square. The bland early 1980s facade will be removed and replaced with this:

Thanks for that Will. They seem to have started on it too. There was a lot of activity there last week and I think some fencing has gone up. Sure will make a nice change to that building. That end of town is shaping up well now.

Nice find Will, that is a vast improvement on what was there. It even looks better than the Credit Unions new building!
