Well obviously they are short term statistics, and only affecting traffic on south road heading southbound towards flinders from the city.
Over the long term though other factors will come into play such as commercial offices in outer city areas. However I mean 2 million is almost double our population, so if u think about our major roads now, if double the people were to congregate to the city and back everyday.... well I dun wanna know what that will be like, nor will I want to be driving at peak hour.
At the same time though PT will be (hopefully) alot better and alot of people will have efficient acces to it.
Will be good to see what adelaide will be like then, but id say ontop of better PT, in 43 years time we will still need a motorway. RAA want it by 2020 but id say by 2050 when pop hits 2 mill we should have it by then at the absolute latest[/quote]

Some predict SA's population growth will go backward once it hits the 1.6m mark (which I think is BS)AtD wrote:Jimmy, depends who you listen to. Some predict peak oil will occur this decade (or already has) and the private car may find itself out of fashion in 2050. It's pure speculation.

I also agree with this, to many reports conflict with each other.crawf wrote: Some predict SA's population growth will go backward once it hits the 1.6m mark (which I think is BS)
I believe we will see a turnaround and see people head back to rural areas leaving Adelaide population growth stagnate. But the rural areas will flourish.
Better for SA in all

Those projections are based on data from statistics from many years ago, some even from the 1996 census. The situation in SA was very different back then, and those projections represent the realities of that time. I have an article from the Advertiser from 1997, which claims that SA's population would peak in 2006, and start declining. This is obviously not happening.crawf wrote:Some predict SA's population growth will go backward once it hits the 1.6m mark (which I think is BS)AtD wrote:Jimmy, depends who you listen to. The issue with all demographic and economic predictions for the future is that the data is based on current trends and/or predicted trends, basically assumptions that will often turn out to be wrong. A prediction is just that, not fact, and more often than not the predictions are inaccurate as factors influencing the demography and economy often change and are not expected.

Hmm.
Well I guess its too early to start thinking of tunnels and just let them do the underpasses/overpasses and as our traffic will probably gradually increase we will then make the move for a tunnel if needed.
Besides if the proposed tunnel between port road and grange road were to be built, could it be extended easily? past richmond?
They would have to build it in such a way if that plan were to go ahead.

The thing about over/underpasses is that they don't actually alleviate traffic. They just let it move somewhere else faster. There's nowhere new for it to go.
Freeways give new road for cars to drive on.
PT gets cars off the road!

Yeah I know this about the under/overpasses but Id say that the gov would have a long term goal with all this.
I mean we are the only major city with no inner city freeway.
Over time the gov will keep adding more underpasses and extra lanes until south road is completely grade separated.
However I agree with you that our PT is not up to the standards that it should be and no wear near capable of handling our future growth.

From today's newspaper article, it appears that the bridge for the overpass will be constructed on the ground first around the moving traffic at the intersection in several different pieces. They will perform this operation on one half of the bridge while they excavate the approach to this half of the underpass and then excavate under the new bridge. This process will then be repeated on the other side of Anzac Highway.

Just a word of warning folks, I've been seeing signs on anzac hwy saying that roadworks for the preliminary stage 1 of the underpass is starting on Monday.
So everyone keep away from there as they are planning to block lanes off, and put a 40km speed zone there with temporary 25km zones if needed.

Judging by that document it seems all south bound traffic on anzac hwy will be merged into the north bound lanes with no right turns allowed onto south road.
It will get ugly there in peak hour I can tell you that now!!

[COM] Re: South Road Upgrade
I went past there today (err yesterday) and noticed a lot of demolition work being carried out on the southwest section where the BP used to be. They were also just about to bring down that 4 or 5 storey yellow brick unit block down... Should be a good sight if anyone wants to camp out!

I commute past this when I'm lazy and drive into work. Taking the train next week for sure!
