I thought the idea of this competition was to think out of the square and come up with a old plan that would eventually be scaled back to something more conservative. If these are scaled back we will end up with some paddocks...

Hold on - these are just renders, what are they planning to DO with the site?? That is the most important thing. Until we have more detail I wouldn't base my opinions on that article.

I saw the pics in the 'Tiza, and couldn't see any details. They were just really poor renders of ... no one could tell what.

Geeze I would have worked up a pile of dog leavings into something resembling that mountain from Close Encounters of the Third Kind if I'd known the chance of a cool $900.000 would be this easy.

Design competition for old Royal Adelaide Hospital site shortlists six entries
Art galleries, museums and student accommodation are some of the suggestions of what should be put on the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site. Six design teams from Australia, Europe and South America have been shortlisted from more than 120 entries in a competition organised by the South Australian Government.

Planning Minister John Rau said a range of ideas had been submitted and most involved demolishing some current buildings. "Some of them envisage large proportions of buildings on the site being demolished and the site being put over largely to open space or different space use," he said. "Others preserve a lot more of the existing buildings but refurb(ish) them and provide different access and entry points through those buildings." Mr Rau said the public would be able to offer comment and designers would put together more detailed plans. "The shortlisted teams will now be paid $100,000 to work with a registered South Australian architect or landscape architect and develop their ideas using feedback from the community," he said.

A public exhibition of the shortlisted designs along with all the entries to the competition is being held at the State Archives Building at Leigh Street in the city until September 27.

The images displayed on the Advertiser are well and truly disappointing, however considering it is the Advertiser, It wouldn't surprise me if they chose the worst aspect of every entry to turn this into a negative story.....

even after looking at the other entries that didn't make the shortlist, only one design really stood out for me.

some very lack-lustrous and meagre designs, in my opinion.

However what's the point in even trying to come up with ideas of what the site might look like, when its purpose hasn't even been determined yet?

Makes me feel quite sick that the govt is paying $900,000 in prizes for this design competition...it was an unrealistic deadline they gave (as if major companies/architects could drop everything and produce much better with little notice and in a 1-2 month deadline.)
The thing is the govt doesn't know what they want there....and I doubt they have the money to develop it properly anyway....it should just be advertised internationally for tender and hope some billionaire will develop it (but they would probably want a second casino license to make it work.)

Perhaps both you and the Advertiser should read the brief and understand the process before espousing this shit, over 140 Architectural firms have spent thousands of hours of unpaid time developed these initial concepts, no one is getting a $900,000 prize for concept sketches. Theses concepts have been judged by an international panel, the 6 winning entries will now be funded to further develop their concepts further using public feedback and many hours of community consultation. Once again a great concept of involving the public, architects, public displays, has been trashed by poor Advertiser reporting and small minded nit wits who read the Advertisers sensational one sided negative view of the world and believe it!

As far as the $900,000 is concerned, the good will and work already submitted by the hundreds of Architects involved would already be worth several millions if we had to pay for it. The process alone has raised the awareness of Adelaide, the site, the state, all around the world. Many hundreds of people have visited the site, know more about Adelaide and contributed in numerous public consultations.

If I was a local or international Architect who had worked hard to contributed to this process and reading all this uninformed crap I would be gravely offended and probably chose to contribute else where in future.

I do like the government approach of providing public displays, community consultation and opportunity for public feedback and I hope to visit the display in Leigh Street to gain a better understanding.

I am concerned by any plans that would demolish the grand older style buildings on North Terrace rather than refurbish and re-purpose these. The horrible high rise buildings, closer to the Botanic Gardens and at the rear, need to be demolished but I would hate to see wholesale demolition across the whole site.
