I still can't believe that the Scottish taxpayers are funding the $1.2m to have it transported here...can anyone explain how the govt/council or whoever manoeuvred this? And why would Scottish govt agree to even pay for it?
I then can't believe with all this generosity and effort to transport it why its not even being displayed in a prominent place?

And why can't the council donate some free land and over ride the govt location and put it where it wants?

They probably see it as garbage removal.

Guys, see link below regarding how much effort has gone into getting this ship back to Adelaide. Note the funding and lobbying for this massive venture has been undertaken by local, private companies and individuals who are dedicated to bringing this bit of history back to Adelaide. From the website itself: "All members of the Clipper Ship 'City of Adelaide' Limited are 100% volunteers and do not receive any remuneration in any way, in any form, at any time. They are dedicated community members who donate their own time, own materials and own money to support the clipper. Thus 100% of your support will go directly towards the efforts to save the historic clipper ship City of Adelaide."

Credit where credit is due. They have done an amazing job to get this ship back to Adelaide.

Port Adelaide Enfield Councillors to start their own maritime precinct plan for City of Adelaide clipper ship

FRUSTRATED with the State Government's plans to display the City of Adelaide in Largs North, Port Adelaide Enfield councillors will research their own maritime precinct in the heart of the Port.

The council has voted to hold a public meeting to garner ideas from locals to establish a maritime tourism plan for Port Adelaide, featuring a more prominent home for the City of Adelaide clipper ship.

The government intends to display the ship - the world's oldest surviving clipper - at Marina Adelaide in Largs North , 5km from the Port town centre, when it arrives from Scotland next year.

So the State Govrnment is desperate for attractions to the Port. Why oh why would they even consider parking the historic attraction anywhere else but the old inner port?

That annoys me. I hate it when people partition against something, only after the physical work has already been put into it...

The clipper ship has officially been re-named back to the original 'City of Adelaide' in a ceremony in London, overseen by the Duke of Edinburgh.

And one more hurdle has been overcome. The Federal Govt funding subsidy has been restored.

HRH Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) renamed the ship from HMS Carrick to City of Adelaide.

I'm no history buff, but outuof interest anyway I've been reading a little bit about the City of Adelaide clipper ship. It is a crucial part of our state history, and I'm very glad that it will find a home in Adelaide.

There is a similar clipper ship in dry dock in London called the Cutty Sark which a significant tourist attraction in Greenwich. The main negative point about the City of Adelaide is that it will cost up to $50M to restore to its former glory!

I admit at first I thought "what's all the fuss" about this old hulk that will take mega-dollars to refurbish to any semblance of a tourist attraction - but I have been won over after following some of the story.

What a great opportunity for one of SA's big firms or internationals wanting to profit from SA to sponsor this boat and gift something relevant and important to our State's history and tourist future (who doesn't like visiting an old ship).

C'mon corporate SA - let's see some commitment to this one - Santos, BHPB or even a BP who plan on spending a massive amount looking to exploit our mineral wealth - stump up early and become a benefactor!

Who else could have enough investment in SA to spend up big on this....could be a nice bookend to future Sumbarines in Adelaide - the first ship, plus the latest ships - a nice story?

This year marks the 7th anniversary of the Port Admiral Hotel being closed & sealed up!
