I love this photo ... Adelaide Oval when complete will look amazing (especially at night) when crossing the footbridge.

Without doubt the most impressive stadium 'approach' in Australia.
Cue the hoardes of invading Victorians whose spider-senses will be tingling because someone dared say a stadium in Australia had a better 'something' than the MCG!

FWIW I agree with you, but those whiny Vics can only see their precious G and thats all for them..waah waah G is best, doesn't matter when you tell them for example that it sucks for watching Soccer. The more oval shape of Adelaide Oval will make it better than the circular G for International amd A-League Soccer IMO.
Kasey771, I think your judgement of Victorian opinion towards this venue is quite exaggerated. I live here in Melbourne and most of the people I speak to about this are quite excited for it's induction as an AFL venue and look forward to games being hosted there, otherwise they seemingly don't care. This snobbery you speak of is a very small minority, or can be found over in NSW. Most Victorian's too will admit that the MCG is an average venue; it's a cold, concrete bowl with no significant features.

Yup, the constant confrontational attitude some Adelaide posters have about Melbourne and Sydney is more annoying than any comments coming from those two cities. This is a great development for Adelaide, celebrate that rather than trying to use it as a piece of yet another interstate bashing exercise.

I'd go close to say the best development in the last 30 years. The catalyst that this development is, and will be, for future investment and development will be monumental. We only seen around 30% of what is coming up around development wise around the riverbank/North Terrace precinct, purely because of this project.

It's massive.
Walking on over....

I just looked up that the airport upgrade was $260 million.

That's equivalent to say maybe $350 million now.

So Adelaide oval is a bigger project.

What makes it look "dated"? It doesn't look brand-new, I'll grant; but "dated"?
For mine, the bricks along the stairways and the fact that the new stands monster it make it look dated. The more I look at it though, it's not that bad, and hopefully they close off the gaps at the top of the stands in time also. I can't wait for 53,000 people in there for the showdown next year!

Definitely agree with the red bricks along the stairs. They really look out of place and don't even do the job they're supposed to do - tie in the historical elements of the back of the stand - well. They should have left the history to the back and the cricket change rooms and 50 year member areas where they've incorporated actual parts of the old stands, rather than tried to mimick them. They look great. The side and front facing bricks however, really don't. Hopefully they've got some spare cash and the inclination to render over them.

I otherwise think the western stand holds up really well and won't date quickly at all.

As for the development on the whole, it's amazing. I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to cricket and was worried that the special feel of AO might be destroyed, but I made it down to the Shield game for a while over two days and think they've done a really good job of keeping AO unique at the same time as modernising it and turning it into more of a stadium.

I was interstate for the period leading up to the development of the Airport.. was there a lot of hand-wringing about spending that much money on the airport as there was on half a billion for the Oval?
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

Not that I recall, because at least everybody agreed that we did need a new airport terminal. The old one was an absolute joke. Only a couple of hundred people thought the old airport was fine. The only thing we whinged about was that it opened a couple of months later than anticipated.

Adelaide Oval on the other hand, you had just about a third of the city arguing that we should redevelop it, a third wanting a new stadium on the NRAH site, and another 1/6th wanting to redevelop Football Park, and another 1/6th who didn't want to do anything at all. And then, factor in all the other offshoot arguments; the case for or against complete redevelopment, partial redevelopment, roof, no roof, 50,000+ capacity, 60,000+ capacity, FIFA-compliance, etc.

and then there was those individuals who hated it because it looked like a 'toilet bowl' ............ I'm expecting a retraction from those persons any day now.

You won't get one. But really, who gives a crap (pun intended) about how it will look from the odd helicopter-shot on TV? Surely they should be more concerned with how comfortable it is to watch sport in?

It still looks like a toilet bowl from above.

I love that one of the Torrens Footbridge, with the Convention Centre behind it, with a few large cranes behind them! Shows how much development work is going on in the area and that's without showing the Oval itself!

Awesome pics, mate!
