Anyway, back to the RAH site. The videos for the shortlisted entries are now online:

The only video worthy of any comment is the one by Nice Architects (the mountain). At least they seem to have put some consideration into what the place might be used as. Again though I have to give them allowance for the fact that the actual use is still unknown.

You're joking right? Every one of those entries has considered usage, some even completely spell it out with diagrams in their videos. Whether you agree or not with each entry's proposed uses is a different matter.pushbutton wrote:The only video worthy of any comment is the one by Nice Architects (the mountain). I guess the videos didn't hold my interest long enough for me to see that then. I very much doubt any of them have considered a usage that would be of real interest to most people.Nathan wrote:You're joking right? So you're not even bothering to watch/read the proposals, and then complaining that certain things haven't been considered? That takes the cake.pushbutton wrote:I guess the videos didn't hold my interest long enough for me to see that then. I wish there was a way to move the heritage buildings and open up the north west corner of the site. I can imagine more people coming in from that direction and I'd love to see more open space there. I look at most of the designs and think of the area immediately west of the railway station that limits access to the parklands - there's not enough to draw people in, and lots of buildings acting as a barrier to keep people out.
For this reason, I like the mountain the best. The mountain will show people there is more space behind the buildings, and the small number of new buildings allows for more movement through/into the site.

Yes I think the mountain one is the best of the choices....like you can still take an elevator to get up/down from the top to the bar/observation deck from there....but probably should be a higher and wider mountain.
Just a [serious] thought.... could a gondola/cable-car work from here [to go over the zoo and to the riverbank precinct] and also look good?

All these designs are crap to me.. just turn the area back into botanic gardens and demolish all the lame heritage buildings.
[SWP] Re: #PRO: Former RAH Site (Design Competition)
You seem to have a problem with everything? Maybe instead of relying on the video to educate your tiny mind, why not head down to where the exhibition is being held, and read the proposals for yourself instead.pushbutton wrote:The only video worthy of any comment is the one by Nice Architects (the mountain). I dont get why this is so hard. There are some beutiful large scale heritage buildings on the North Terrace corner of the site. Convert them to either high spec heritage style appartments and/or hotels. There are so few genuine heritage appartments in Adelaide, i believe these would be snapped up. Likewise with a hotel. So few truly heritage options to stay in the CBD. People love high ceilings and genuine quality heritage style fittings in refurbished buildings and are prepared to pay large sums to buy/ stay in these type of buildings. Demolish the rest of the shambles on the site. The rest..., just extend the Botanic gardens, so the heritage buildings are in a truely beautiful landscaped and green setting. As with the rest of the parklands...keep it simpe...keep it mowed....keep it green.

I agree that none of the six shortlisted proposals are inspirational, but I like the Oculus design the best.
It offers a good balance between re-purposing the existing heritage buildings, injections of new contemporary architecture, allowing new parkland spaces to permeate the site, and also what appears to be a relatively seamless integration with the Botanic Gardens. Thumbs up from me

Todays Indaily has a summary of each of the final proposals and a 'How to Vote Guide'. Check it out here; http://indaily.com.au/design/2013/12/06 ... ote-guide/
Make sure you vote in the People's Choice Award before voting closes at midday Monday 9th Dec. So far nearly 4000 people have voted and over 15,000 have visited the website in the last 14 days.
Vote here; http://odasa.sa.gov.au/rahsite/
On the website you can find each teams detailed proposals for staging, financial viability and their response to the criteria, as well as their design proposal and video.
Each entry has be judged by an independent expert Jury using the following Criteria;
Connected and integrated
— How well does it connect with the surrounding areas?
— The site needs to connect and enhance its parkland surrounds, the adjacent universities and support the East End Precinct and the city.
— The design needs to improve the way Adelaide fits together.
Innovative and economically viable
— Does the design breath new life into the site?
— The site currently supports 470,000 out-patients, 80,000 in-patients and 4500 staff per year.
— The new design needs to demonstrate adaptive reuses, innovative new uses and bring a new population to the site to ensure sustainability for the East End, the Greater Riverbank Precinct and the State.
An inclusive place
— Is this site a place you’d like to spend time?
— The site needs to create public open spaces and be a place for everyone.
— The design needs to make it easy for diverse community use.
Cultural heritage
— Does the design respect the history of the buildings and the site’s cultural significance?
— The site is a key site along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace and within the Education and Culture Precinct of the Riverbank Precinct.
— The design needs to demonstrate best practice sustainable design, including adaptive reuse.
The winners of the competition, the Peoples Choice Award and two Student Prizes (from over 400 Student entries) will be announced next Tuesday 10th Dec.
