We've been through this. Despite "common knowledge" recent studies have shown that plane trees aren't a big source of allergies and that all species of trees drop branches.

Aside from the dropping of branches, they are just fairly ugly trees and don't create much atmosphere IMO. I suffer from allergies as well but I hardly think a few trees in Vic square will make much difference.

Planting non-native trees in Reconciliation Plaza really wouldn't be a good look.

I'm not a fan of Gum trees either. :x

When I drive around Adelaide I always notice how terrible they look in gardens and parks. Ugly, unkempt and no real green colour (more of a grey?) Even the "healthy" ones look bad.
all species of trees drop branches.

Also, it's been PROVEN gum trees shed more branches than a regular tree. I should know - I've had them in my street. They are wayward and unstable by nature, because they have had to withstand the Australian outback... every time a storm hits, it's always gum trees that are falling/causing damage. I've never seen a plane tree or an exotic tree cause the same kind of problems a gum does. Stupid council for not realising this.

here are some images of mature specimens of the trees selected for the new plaza...
"ugly, unkept and grey" certainly do not spring to mind. not every street tree in Adelaide has to be a London plane tree.

That's not proof, that's anecdotal.

Blah... get over it, can't believe we're still debating the merit of trees in Victoria Square.

Wasn't it decided that we're getting native gums for the plaza section and planes for the lawn area?
Best of both.

As mentioned before, naming the street Reconciliation Plaza then two seconds later planting a bunch of non-native European trees would be idiocy and a PR disaster.
The trees they've planted are rightly native to Australia and as per the photos in the post previous, should hopefully (eventually) look fantastic.

There are species of eucalypt which do look pretty scrappy, but it is a huge family of trees, and there are many species that look spectacular. The trees in Mants' photos look fantastic IMO
cheers,

Blah get over it? Then you go on to complain about the trees your self?

So very Adelaide of all of you, to sit around bickering about the little things, like which trees drop more branches.

Maybe next you guys can complain about the width of pavers used? I know Pushbutton is already complaining about the colour of the pavers in Rundle Mall...

I recognise this row of trees from Kings Park in Perth. Having seen them in the flesh, they look quite spectacular and the VSQ examples would look just as spectacular if they are lit up at night.

Er, what?
My post was a 'blah, get over it' and a defence for the trees they've picked - unless I've missed something.

Love the trees, love the mall pavers.

Yeh, sorry, I skipped over it and saw something about trees, native, irony, and assumed you were having a whinge as well.
I skipped over it, and was partly angered by a speeding fine I got in the mail.

Might as well jump on the bandwagon and give my two cents worth...

Those trees in Kings Park might be nice but they can be very dangerous. I've seen what they can do in high winds. Hopefully it will never come to that. OK, I'm no expert but there could be a good reason why they went ahead with this type of eucalypt. Maybe the buildings surrounding Vic Square act as a windbreak. Anyone in the know?

Cheers
