Stunning photo of the crowd on the bridge Matt. Really makes the point of it's relevance. Just projecting into the future - all the extra activities on the river banks will come - coupled with the casino much activity all the time.

As someone said, they seem to have got it right - the vibrancy is already evident and each business (caffes etc) will help escalate overall results many times over - synergy!

A kind of threshold seems to have been reached!

ADELAIDE - TOWARDS AS GREATER CITY SKYLINE

The vibrancy the footbridge is creating is fantastic. Even yesterday I had the afternoon off and had a look. There was great little bar on the city side (Blue hive or something) that made it just far too easy for me and many others to down a few sparkling ales, while looking over the Torrens on one side, and a big screen on the other

I used the bridge many times over the course of the Test Match...it is and will continue to be a very important addition to the functionality of the Oval/ Riverbank precinct. :applause:
After the end of a days play, 35k+ people leaving seemed to generate a massive choke-point at the WMD end of the bridge. I'm unsure how much this will improve once the construction barriers are removed. Is our new bridge already not wide enough?
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

Royal Croquet Club - https://www.facebook.com/RoyalCroquetClub
It's an 5-day activation on the River Torrens riverbank in celebration of the upcoming Ashes and launch of the new foot bridge in the theme of all things Royal...

It's a garden party when you can play croquet, watch the cricket, enjoy the music, eat & drink plus much more... We'll be open 9am till late everyday - serving breakfast, lunch & dinner.
And a photo of the south end of the bridge today:

Nice if the budget could stretch to give the festival theatre a new coat of paint.

Enough with the width of the bridge. If it was any wider it would look stupid the 340 days a year there's not a large event on, just a giant out of scale bridge on the Torrens lake.

agreed, that whole festival theater area is looking very dilapidated, although AFAK and upgrade of sorts has been penned.

As great as the footbridge is, I really do worry about it's southern terminus. there is no direct path to north terrace, and you have to climb stairs and walk over another narrow bridge to get onto the same level. could cause a huge bottle neck when 50,000 football fans want to leave at the same time.

It definitely wouldn't be everyones cup of tea, but I'd love to see the Festival Theatre with Ivy growing on some of the faces (mirroring Adelaide Oval on the other side of the Torrens) and light panels like the Rundle Lantern and Entertainment Center on the other faces. That's just because the surface finish of the Festival Theatre has always bugged me though, it looks like a suburban fence.

IIRC don't the Casino Upgrade/Festival Plaza plans involve removing that bridge anyway?

The Royal Croquet Club will be returning for the Adelaide Festival Fringe. This activation of the Riverbank space during the Ashes Test took advantage of a major event at the AO and proximity to the footbridge and accessibility to public transport links, highlighting the potential of the emerging Riverbank precinct.

I like the ability to transform the spaces along the Riverbank precinct in keeping with different events and seasonal happenings. Someone mentioned more permanent cafés etc but not sure about their sustainability, especially during the colder months and can they match the level of vibrancy and interest achieved by (for example) The Royal Croquet Club, including the Blue Hive space.

Regattas is great as a permanent presence, ably supported by the Festival Centre's new alfresco area, developed in conjunction with the footbridge and surrounds.

The full width Footbridge at 8 metres is sufficient to cater for the large crowds at AO events. The temporary constriction at the AO end during the Ashes had a bit of a funneling effect (minor inconvenience) and the width along the footbridge was narrowed by the temporary protection barriers - but still coped. I think the 8m width is just right to cater for large crowds. Any wider and it will look like a roadway not a pedestrian footbridge and impinge on the aesthetics of the area. Once complete and with lighting and the waterfall end, it will look picture postcard fabulous.

Well said Vee. Totally agree. The potential that the bridge brings will surpass even the planners' expectations. The permanent cafes you mentioned are sustainable all year round. The next trick is to provide the infrastructure for the pop-ups without spoiling the riverbank effect. One very cheap and quick way to enliven the whole area is in permanent tree lighting, like the spectacular green lighting of the large tree at the Croquet Club, and the green "egg" lights on the ground. The opposite bank is a bit dark and colourless an night...planned, smart and tasteful lighting of the trees (upwards flood/spotlights, not fairy lights) would bring the whole area alive at night, complemented by the bridge lights, and the Riverbank Stand. Very exciting potential.

Interesting to get the views of 3 design experts, as reported by InDaily.
Adelaide Oval precinct: a design review
The revamped Adelaide Oval received a big tick from the public for its performance during the Ashes Test – but what does Adelaide’s design community say, particularly about the contentious footbridge?
I'm not sure that the footbridge deserves the 'contentious' tag, considering the overwhelming support and praise of recent days. Reminds me of the naysayers who decried 'the tram to nowhere' before the extension was completed and look at how popular it is now.

Read the opinions of the 3 design experts (focus on the footbridge)
