Just a reminder all that voting closes at midday today, so if you haven't voted yet, you best be doing so this morning.

I have a very simple plan: give the western part to Adelaide university which has run out of space and the eastern side to the botanic gardens. We don't need people on the other side of the world telling us how to plan our city.

So, peoples choice = the one with the hill.
Winner = the one with the big Lego block.

I don't mind the people's choice winner. It's crazy, but actually a reasonable solution.
Hate hate hate the judges choice. It's gaudy, has no respect for the space, and feels like such a cop out solution. Bad result.

Radical Art Gallery wins SA Design competition for old RAH site.
InDailyRAH DESIGN COMPETITION
A plan for a radical art gallery – think Hobart’s MONA – has just been announced as the winner of the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site design competition.
Planning Minister John Rau announced the winner a little after 10am this morning. Nice Architects’ design – known affectionately as The Hill – won the People’s Choice award, which was voted on by members of the public.
SLASH’S design centres on adaptive reuse of the site’s buildings. It proposes the most minor amendments to the site, and is therefore theoretically the cheapest to construct. New uses are found for most of the old buildings – including the aforementioned art gallery, hotel, community centre, high school and museum. There’s also space for apartments and mixed-use retail.
The design is known as SLASH because of the site’s most interesting feature – a diagonal path that runs from the corner of North Terrace and Frome St across the site and into the parklands.
It also displays some sensible economics by planning to replace the entire hospital population with students and residents, meaning the economic impact of the hospital’s relocation to the West End is minimised on the East.
“The jury was impressed by the depth and breadth of research SLASH and Phillips/Pilkington Architects took into the social and physical history and condition of the RAH site,” , chair of the expert jury Shelley Penn said in announcing the winners.
“The winner’s scheme offers a vision for an evolving, dynamic civic place and it offers a high degree of economic viability.
“Their proposal presented a sustainable proposition by minimising energy and waste, and the mix of uses for the site proposed by the winner was strongly supported by the jury.”

Okay, moving right along. The design competition's over, thank god. What a complete waste of time that whole process was. The 'winners' aren't going to get built, so there's no point foaming or having an argy bargy about it.

In other words, the government had chosen this design because it'll be the cheapest alternative to what it currently there; minimal demolition required just refurb of buildings. I saw so many good ideas that didn't even make the finals list, stupid competition..Vee wrote:SLASH.

Not only a waste of time but much worse a waste of taxpayers money (yours and mine)! I would say it was also a wasted effort by the talented designers / architects who submitteed their designs, had I seen any evidence that any effort was made.[Shuz] wrote:Okay, moving right along. To be fair (and as I said earlier) the one with the "Mountain" did clearly have some effort put into it, but even that one lacks any substance. Again though, that's not the designers fault. How could it possibly have substance when no decision has been made of land use yet?

They're now saying it was an "ideas competition" - which then begs the question, why would you pick something based on it being cheapest if it's all hypothetical anyway? Surely an ideas competition is when you put price to one side and judge based on what is the best solution for the area, not the penny-pinching one?Patrick_27 wrote:In other words, the government had chosen this design because it'll be the cheapest alternative to what it currently there; minimal demolition required just refurb of buildings. I didn't get the message that they picked it because it was the cheapest. They picked it because it proposed the best use of space, suggested activities and uses for that space, and involved replacing the population of medical workers that will leave with the RAH move with students, residents and others. That sounds like a solid proposal as compared to the other architecturally exciting but but baron proposals.Nathan wrote:They're now saying it was an "ideas competition" - which then begs the question, why would you pick something based on it being cheapest if it's all hypothetical anyway? To potentially consider turning this maze-like old hospital and it's wards into student accom is depressing and sickening.
I hope one day this site will go to international tender and something world-class gets developed here. What does the forum think will be its future direction?

Agreed Mono. Although only an ideas competition, it provides a way forward in terms of approach to develop the site.monotonehell wrote:I didn't get the message that they picked it because it was the cheapest. It wasn't my first choice, and I don't like the architectural style proposed, but there are some really good practical ideas that come from the winning scheme ... Hence I can see why it was chosen.
[SWP] Re: #PRO: Former RAH Site (Design Competition)
But isn't that what the public have been saying for years now anyway? Blind Freddy knows that if you're going to displace the workforce of the new RAH, it's only logical to introduce a new workforce / population of some sort to maintain the social and economic status quo of the East End and surrounds. We have been crying out for a new high school for years. We didn't need a team of some Victorian architects to tell us that. Jesus.
