Dubai - An example to look up to
I recently commented in one of the CBD development threads, as an aside, that if we want Adelaide to become truly sensational, we should raise our standards a lot. I offered Dubai as an example of what can be achieved when people use their imagination with regard to city development.
A couple of people on that thread didn't seem to understand what I meant, so here are just a few random examples of some of the many amazing things to be found in Dubai. I admit I haven't had the pleasure of actually exploring the place myself yet. I've only been in the airport. However it is quite apparent that it is the most exciting, fascinating, fun place in the world, as well as the most progressive in terms of development.
I'm not saying we should copy it, but that we should learn from their attitude.
I didn't want this to hijack the CBD threads any more than it already has, so please feel free to discuss here.

Re: Dubai - An example to look up to
I could go on, but I think that makes my point!
I'm not saying we should copy Dubai, any more than they copied anywhere else.
I am saying we should not settle for mediocrity, and that we should aim much much much higher, as Dubai did!
All that's required is imagination. Well ok, money too. But with imagination we could find ways to make the money! With imagination, guts, and determination, we could attract actual real international tourists. Not the few who are content to take a snapshot of a statue of a pig eating rubbish from a bin, but the ones from all over the world who want incredible and unique experiences!
I strongly believe Adelaide has the potential to become a major international tourism hub. The tourism could eventually become SAs biggest commercial sector, and bring in billions of dollars for the long term prosperity of the state.
It takes a lot more than logos and slogans though!

Re: Dubai - An example to look up to
I believe the so-called "Cheese Grater" is Adelaides first building that could sit pretty comfortably alongside any of the above images and be equally impressive.
It's just a real shame that it's not a hotel, resort, theme park, indoor skiing centre, theatre, cinema, casino, museum, exhibition, or even shopping centre, but merely a place of work and not open to the public. Is anyone here beginning to see where I'm coming from?

Pushbutton, please stop. This thread is ridiculous. To suggest that a theme park is more important than a place where the cure for cancer could be made is beyond bizarre and indeed reflects badly on yourself.

You seem to have completely misread this thread Will. I can't really make it much clearer! Please re-read my posts, and look at the images above if you actually want to understand what I'm saying. It had nothing whatsoever to do with curing cancer! Will wrote:Pushbutton, please stop. This thread is ridiculous. As for this thread being ridiculous, I'm sure the same comment was probably made to the designers of most if not all of the structures above at one point in time (possibly including the cheese grater). Thankfully they took no notice!

Pushbutton a majority of those are concept renders yet to be built, most will more than likely not be built. Some do look amazing though ...

As is hurling offensive insults at someone you don't even know, simply because they dare to state their opinion about how they think the city in which they live should develop in the future. I'd report your offensive post to admin but I really can't be bothered right now. I will if it happens again though.serca wrote: Comparing Dubai to Adelaide is harty har har bing bong ding a long spastic

Wasn't an insult at you directly or an insult at all for that matter. If I offended you I apologize... I do respect your opinion just not exactly agree with it .
