[COM] Victoria Square Upgrade - $24m
[COM] Re: #U/C: Victoria Square Upgrade - $24m
It looks great, but the lack of symmetry annoys me. I dunno if that's the same with anybody else?
As unviable as it sounds, I'd love for the southbound tram to go clockwise around the right side of the Square, but that would probably cause chaos to the people who already struggle with the current set up.
The other day I found myself laughing at someone driving the wrong way through the paved road that cuts through the centre of Vic Sq...

One would expect the Symmetry issue to be addressed in the future when the "square" becomes a "rectangle" as opposed to the current "diamond" but not as a part of stage 2
[COM] Re: #U/C: Victoria Square Upgrade - $24m
While I wasn't laughing I have also seen seen people both driving the wrong way through the middle before it was closed for the TDU, and also turning right from Franklin Street down the tram tracks (south). A part of this I think was the confusion when all the road works were underway, but also probably a bit more signage might be worthwhile for people who don't frequent the city often or are elderly drivers.Phantom wrote: The other day I found myself laughing at someone driving the wrong way through the paved road that cuts through the centre of Vic Sq...

I wish I was. I will a bit amazed myself as with the person turing right off Franklin street down the tram track I was directly behind them (but I turned into the correct side of Victoria Sq . I don't know how it turned out but assume they where lucky and didn't come across a tram. On reflection I could sort of see how they were confused. The tram track sort of "looks" like the other side of the road heading south.[Shuz] wrote:Surely you jest, the both of you.mgb wrote:While I wasn't laughing I have also seen seen people both driving the wrong way through the middle before it was closed for the TDU, and also turning right from Franklin Street down the tram tracks (south). Oh hell, it annoys me also! I hope it's an incentive to keep the future stages moving through quicker. Yarwood said that it would be up to the new council to take the next step through, which hopefully will see funding for the next stage come through in the next year or so..Phantom wrote:It looks great, but the lack of symmetry annoys me. I too, once thought about sending the southbound tram line to the east of the square but it could cause to many issues if the tram network expands in the future. And most of the tram users are come from the western side of the square (i.e. Hilton Hotel, Central Markets.

I hope those fancy big arbourers are still going to go up and we're not going to be left with the cheap alternative that's there now? Does anyone know what the deal is? What's there now certainly doesn't look as grand as the master plan in the video?

The current shade structures are only for Stage 1/2. If/when stage 3 happens, they will be removed and the grand arbors would take their place. The current structures are designed so that if that happens, they can be moved and re-used elsewhere (possibly one of the other squares, riverbank, or parklands).

Rarely does anything look as glossy as the computer renderings in real life.Paulns wrote:What's there now certainly doesn't look as grand as the master plan in the video?

This was only stage 1, the rest of what's in the video comes later (hopefully - subject to funding).

Why are so many parts of this project "temporary" to be replaced at later stages. Seems both a waste of time and money. Do it properly the first time!

Agreed Ben. The obvious strategic idea would have been to build the shade structures in the style of the final arbour. Then extend the arbour during a later stage when funds were available. Not only would they have been much more attractive than the current industrial-style and very temporary-looking structures, it would have been much cheaper in the long term. It would also have enhanced the vision of the final design. There must have been other factors why that wasn't implemented.

The tram line first needs to be moved before at least the western arbours can be installed.Honey of a City wrote:Agreed Ben. But it's not a waste of the money if it is intended that the current arbours will be recycled and used elsewhere - somewhere in the parklands? I'm thinking Adelaide Oval & environs would be good.
