News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
I was going to say Dog not sure if seeing cars parked is a reflection of activity those 50,397 people came from somewhere, great to hear the north of the city was busy - we stayed at the growing for about 30min after and the city was buzzing on the walk home and great to see the train station a hive of activity for a change
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
Ah your photos make me happy, the cars can go get @$%#*. Are you aware dog, that it is possible to travel somewhere in something other than a car. The pedestrian vibe of the city yesterday was brilliant, and it appeared TransAdelaide prob didn't expect that many people to travel in by train, so early on in the day. This is not a negative, this is a huge positive. The only thing I want to see done fairly urgently (infact right away) is that all station platforms along the Seaford and Gawler lines can taken 6 car trains. There are still a half a dozen that can not fit a 6 car train (like Oaklands and Mawson Lakes) which is silly because special events require the longest trains possible to move many people at onceDog wrote:Good on ya Adelaide City Council!
Game day and your blinkered game day parking restrictions leaves not only North Adelaide streets but car parks empty too! How does this help revitalise the city or bring patrons to North Adelaide cafés.

More than happy that people took up the public transport option,jk1237 wrote:Ah your photos make me happy, the cars can go get @$%#*. I live at North Adelaide and walk everywhere anyway! That why I live here, My point being that the empty streets and North Adelaide car parks is a lost opportunity for the local cafés. North Adelaide copes well with the Womad, oval concert traffic, and in years gone by the Sky- Show, it brings lots of foot traffic and disperses people in all directions. why the council has to make special arrangements and limit local parking to 3hours just for the footy is beyond me.

Some answers........
- Sorry, there are no artistic impressions of the Hindmarsh Square landscaping upgrade. I think the idea is to match the NE corner with the NW as much as possible.
- Empty car parks are probably a good thing. Target is to get >70% of spectators to the Oval on public transport and the response seems to have been better than expected. Council's aim was to protect the parking rights of residents and businesses in North Adelaide and again this seems to have worked. Empty car parks such as in your pictures could have been used but obviously were not needed in the locations where they were (Dunn St? Lion ?)
- Council had sound modelling done on all its major events sites such as Bonython Park, Park 24 and the East Park Lands.
Based on that modelling we have developed Operating Guidelines for the control of sound levels in those parks. When a major music festival is staged the Council employs an on-site acoustic engineer (at the expense of the event organiser) who monitors sound levels at the various stages and certain external points. In the case of Soundwave, there were numerous and prolonged breeches of the allowed decibel ratings and this may cause Council to review any licence request from Soundwave for a 2015 event in that location.
In my opinion it is not acceptable for an event organiser to disregard the standards set by professional sound engineers and then expect to continue the use of such public places for future events.

Thanks for the reply and information David, council would be justified to review the licensing in my opinion. If there are set limits in place with breaches of this, then Bonython park may not be the best location for it anyway.david wrote:

Gee Anne Moran made an absolute fool of herself this week.
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/messenger ... 6873871047
Then we get this classic from the North Adelaide society (you know, the anti-Adelaide Oval light towers, anti-Barton Rd, anti-Le Cornu site, anti-well just about anything)
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/messenger ... 6875225463
Makes for a good laugh these idiots claiming they're misunderstood. Anne Moran is pretty much the face of the NIMBY attitude North Adelaide residents and the ACC are renowned for. The irony is her claim about the perception North Adelaide and its gaggle of snobby councillors are holding the state back is exactly true. That is why they are constantly (and rightfully) derided by the media. Even Andrew Demitrieou pretty much said this when discussing the Adelaide Oval redevelopment - he knew if the ACC got it's hands on it the redevelopment would never get off the ground, so the first decision was to sideline them, and as a result we have a brilliant, world class stadium, something that would not have happened if the ACC was involved in the development.

Lol at Cr. Anne "no" Moran. Truth hurts does it? What a goose! One of the quirks of Adelaide that I love is that in this city, the 'rich'tossers of North Adelaide think they're better than everybody else, but for their sins we make them live under the predominant flight path of Adelaide Airport. Enjoy that noise you stick in the mud twats:)
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

The "rich tossers" of North Adelaide is a worn out stereotype. The reality is that the population of North Adelaide is far more progressive and diverse than many actual "rich tosser" suburbs such as Medindie and pockets within the Eastern and inner South suburbs. You only need to wander down the side streets of North Adelaide to see the diversity of inner city housing it has, including small workers cottages, terraces, apartments, student accommodation and housing trust.Kasey771 wrote:Lol at Cr. Yes some members of the council are conservative such as Ann Moran, but others are very much progressive particularly when you compare them to the extremely conservative councils that fringe the city. Finally, the reality is that any major development now is out of the Council's control anyway (such as Lecornu) so the idea that North Adelaide "NIMBYs" are stopping development in the city is not really correct.

It was the NIMBY attitude of Moran and her North Adelaide cronies that forced the Government to strip them off their major development powers (and rightly so)JAKJ wrote:The "rich tossers" of North Adelaide is a worn out stereotype. Adelaide Aquatic Centre to undergo upgrade with bonus sustainability, accessibility!!
Improvements eg interactive water play, leisure features, upgrades including re-tiling, new pool covers, improved accessibility features, improved water filtration and savings and huge savings on energy bills.
More:The Adelaide Aquatic Centre is preparing to undergo improvement works that will provide residents and visitors with a modern and energy efficient place to swim, play and socialise.
Scheduled to begin in April this year, the project will achieve significant water and energy savings through the installation of a new water efficient filtration system, pool covers and new high efficiency condensing boilers.
Deputy Lord Mayor Natasha Malani said the upgrade will ensure the Centre continues to be one of the State’s leading community leisure centres, reaffirming Council’s commitment to build energy efficient sustainable infrastructure for residents and visitors.
“The Centre has been operating for 40 years now and this next stage of work will bring the pools up to a modern standard, as well as providing an accessible ramp to the 50 metre pool and accessibility lifts to leisure pool."

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
David, is the ANZAC Centenary Memorial Garden Walk mentioned in your council meeting notes, the one proposed as part of the State Governments riverbank master plan as one of the city to river connections??
I agree the paper has been quite full on with the council attacks of late. The current idea that the council hates trees is simply ridiculous. But unfortunately our local media is fuelled by outrage, and if they gave balanced reports then they wouldn't sell papers.

Hi Nathan,
We have asked Renewal SA for more details, but the one drawing we were shown is the one you have in your post so I assume we are talking about the same thing. One of our problems is that we just don't know how they would propose to make the important link to the river and in particular we wonder what happens when the 'walk' gets to the Parade Ground and the Parade Ground building, because there isn't the available width and there would need to be some careful transitions with the levels and the linkage across Victoria Drive to the river
I think it is a great idea if it can be done because it would link the Mall and Gawler Place through the cultural precinct and on to the river. I am not sure how the Governor will feel about losing about 10 metres of his garden (!) and some councillors, with $ signs in their eyes, are worried about the loss of some parking spaces on the west side of Kintore Avenue!

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
The pictured Garden Walk is amazing, but why not go a step further and give at least 75% of the Government House Gardens back to the people? Security fence (tastefully) off the immediate area around Government House, and remove sections of the current stone wall along North Terrace and open it right up. Seems absurd that in the 21st Century that this large and beautiful CBD garden is only open for the odd garden party and an annual public open day.
Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
Move the governor to Carclew or Carrick Hill and open it all up.
