Run the buses down Botanic Drive & Frome Road in bus-only lanes similar to the existing 7am-7pm Currie / Grenfell format.
A bit messy, but a cheaper alternative.

A 500m tunnel to take buses from Hackney Road to Rundle Road, cutting four minutes off travel time, was promised by the Labor Government today.

Premier Jay Weatherill said a Labor Government “will progress planning in 2014/15 with the aim to complete construction by 2017?.

But first, we need special machines to give the O'Bahn a new look!
A busway grinding truck that will clean & even out the surfaces of the track will do the trick!
We also need to give the track some fine loose ballast too as like on railways gives a smoother ride & weeds don't grow underneath it!

Grinding concrete is unlikely to make it look better and is likely to damage wet weather performance.

...except where they do! And ballast doesn't give a smoother ride at all. Ballast was considered for the O-bahn track, but it would not have worked well on our expansive soils. Instead they put the track on drilled concrete pile foundations, which gives a much smoother ride. Then rather than using ballast for purely cosmetic reasons, they left the track above ground level to make inspection and maintenance easier. And IMO this also makes it look better.

extending the O-Bahn from Hackney road towards the city in an underpass is not a new idea .I think it was raised around 2008.

Are you proposing to construct a new bus only road between the tip of Botanic Drive and Frome Road? There's a little bit of parkland there that would allow it, but you'd also have to upgrade Botanic Road, Frome Road and Frome Street. Also goodbye to holding any events in Botanic Park.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Yes.
You'd also have to upgrade Botanic Road, Frome Road and Frome Street.
Why would Frome Road and Frome Street need to be upgraded? All that needs to be done, literally, is to mark the left hand lanes either side, with 'Bus Only 7am - 7pm' exactly as they have done on Currie and Grenfell streets.

Botanic Road would be the tricky one. Currently it's one-way eastbound & there's a hell of a lot of parking on both sides, which would no doubt cause an uproar if they got removed / reduced. I think the ideal solution would be to construct a new bus-only road, along the same alignment, in both directions south of Botanic Drive. The loss however would be taking away 6-8m of parklands to accomodate this - assuming 2.7-3.0m width bus lanes, kerbing, and minor landscaping treatments. The bus lanes would cross over Botanic Drive just outside the Zoo.
Also goodbye to holding any events in Botanic Park?
Why? There's absolutely no reason why events couldn't continue to be held in Botanic Park. If anything, the provision of a bus lanes through the area would only serve to enhance the attractiveness of Botanic Park as an events space, thanks to improved accessibility by public transport!

The above would surely cost no more than $20m at most. All you are really doing is cutting down a few trees to make way for the new lanes, laying down asphalt, kerbing and painting new lane markings on Frome Street & Frome Road.

Happy for this post and other(s) to move to Visions & Suggestions thread.

Why under the Myer Centre as opposed to Grenfell St? Also, I don't know how deep such tunnels are meant to be, but the Myer Centre has something like 5 sublevels.

Because the tunnel would cross under the Torrens near Kintore Avenue.

Yes. Brisbane had the foresight to include a bus station when they built their Myer Centre. Ours was a poor copy with no bus station, and it would probably be impractical to retrofit one. But it's something to keep in mind for when the former David Jones building is redeveloped.

That $160m Obahn Tunnel will be under construction by 2015:

$160m for 4min? That amount could electrify/upgrade more of the rail network or build more light-rail! Bus lanes and priority traffic signals could get that same time saving at much less cost. If the road is congested, get the private sector on-board to build a tolled tunnel as i'm sure the residents of Walkerville, St Peters, Toorak Gardens, and Highgate can easily afford to pay $5-$10 for a faster drive. Whoever the "expert consultants" were that dreamed up this project, need to be sacked ASAP! It is a dud project, and the design has so many obvious flaws, looks like one of those fantasy projects rushed together ahead of an election campaign to win votes. I hope we get some more info about this project soon: like what the speed limit will be inside the busway tunnel, 100? or will they be limited to 60km/h? How much will the fine be for driving a car down there? Is it for Obahn buses only - or can any bus use it?

I admit it could be worse tho.. It could just be single $90m tunnel which changes direction during the day, and maybe they'll also make sure the roof is low enough to prevent overhead electrical wiring from ever being put in, very clever.

It's just so confounding a decision when you consider all the other things that $160 million could do...

I agree ..... I had to watch the "fly through" several times just to make sure that was all we were getting which is really a north terrace underpass ..... Surely $160m could be spent somewhere else perhaps extend the trams? If it's burning such a hole in their pocket
