The hill is very much more useful for long cricket matches anyway, lets at least wait for the next Ashes to say it's time is done.

It's also worth pointing out that while hopefully Adelaide Oval will keep these crowds, that is in no way guaranteed. The new stadium hype is still in effect and we need to wait to see what the new normal will actually be.

Let's wait 'til we are consistently selling out Adelaide Oval and hitting capacity crowds week in week out for both teams before we start talking about building on the hill/scoreboard.

53,000 is perfect for Adelaide at the moment. I'd rather play at a ground of that size with varied amounts of people versus playing at a cavernous ANZ Stadium.

A good indicator of what could happen with crowds will be this weekend for the Power game. They've come off three losses in a row, it's a Sunday match against a low drawing Victorian side. I'd be hopeful of a crowd in the high 30s but realistically it could be low. If that's the case, take away the Adelaide Oval new stadium hype factor and it could drop lower. I'm hopeful that it won't be the case and we'll maintain strong crowd attendances at SA footy matches regardless of team performance (give or take a few bandwagoners) but we won't really get a picture of that for a few years.

Half correct. It is heritage listed, but it's location is not - it can be moved and even removed. Glenelg oval management have already put up their hand should it ever go from AO.

Mate, it's pretty big and fairly old, you can't just move it very easily.

Surely if they tried to move it then it would be a logistical nightmare. Some
parts would become damaged if they tried to take it apart.

It's still regarded as one of the best cricket scoreboards in the world in that you can turn up at any stage of a match (be it T20, One day or, in particular, a test match) and get a complete picture of the game from the scoreboard (something that you cannot get with a video scoreboard as it rotates between video, ads and the score). For football, it still serves it's core purpose well (displaying the score). I don't see what's wrong with the scoreboard, and why it should be removed.

Agree. The only reasons I see people wanting it removed are for a northern stand or because it takes up a little bit of space that people could stand on. We might as well have built another stadium if we got rid of the hill and scoreboard. Besides, we got a 53,000 seat stadium which suits our current needs, and there still is that ability to expand in the future if it becomes necessary.

Bruce, it's not "people". It's just Shuz. Have a read through all 273 pages of this thread (how much spare time do you have?!) and you'll see that he continually raises the idea every now and then just to throw a sh*t-bomb into the debate and prompt a rise out of everyone. Just ignore. We have a magnificent stadium that will be more than adequate for our needs for many years to come and that's all that needs to be said.

Well, what other reaction do you expect? You're being insensitive to an issue that many of us case about.

People forget that it's not just the Scoreboard. It's the experience that the hill provides during the test matches in the Summer, it's the 100+ year old Bay Fig trees that provide the shade when it's getting too hot, it's the fact that the soil that makes up the hill represents the history of the Torrens Creek becoming the Torrens River. As far as i'm concerned, the good attendance this football season doesn't warrant the further expansion of Adelaide Oval; because sure enough, attendance figures will drop over the years, just like they did when AFL sure enough settled into South Australia. The only thing that may somewhat warrant a new stand would be a Commonwealth Games, which we haven't even bid on or secured one as of yet; but if we did... As Gold Coast will be doing, we can easily build a temp stand on the hill to cater for the temporary requirement for capacity increase.

Insensitive? Hah. Insensitive would be calling for it's demolition, point-blank. I'm not advocating demolishing it. I'm advocating relocating it. It's a 100 year old scoreboard, which, doesn't matter where it belongs, can still serve its purpose by keeping the score. Whether it was at Adelaide Oval 2 or Glenelg Oval, or wherever, it would still fulfil the same purpose.

I see no reason why it absolutely must, needs to, no ifs or buts, has to stay at Adelaide Oval. If we're going to let silly things like a scoreboard get in the way, there's something wrong with people, specifically, Adelaide people. It's these kinds of things that only reinforce that conservative stigma that shrouds us, and that we so desperately need to shake off. We should be planning for 21st century infrastructure, like a new northern grandstand and associated facilities that provides for a better spectator and corporate experience at Adelaide Oval.

I don't think the crowd figures will drop off. In fact, I think they'll remain steady, if not increase over the next few years. Take someone like me - I love my football, but I had not been to a football game in about 5 years in Adelaide, prior to the very last Showdown at AAMI Stadium last year. In fact, in the last five years, I would have gone to the footy at least once, if not twice a year in Melbourne, compared to no games here in Adelaide. This year, purely just because of the Adelaide Oval redevelopment - by season's end, I'll have gone to four games. In one year. Had I had more money, I would have got a member's ticket and tried to attend 11 games, which I may well do next season. I know I'm not the only one.
