[COM] #PRO: Uni of Adelaide - Medical School - 13lvl- $120 million

#91 Post by Howie » Thu Jun 19, 2014 4:36 am

I spoke to a director of an pretty large architectural firm overseas about the last couple of competitions run here and he reckons the competitions they normally enter are over a million bucks prize money (i believe they ended up winning the grand canyon walk that way). Whats on offer here doesn't even cover consultancy and design. So if you can't attract the best of the best, wheres the value in running competitions (case point rah)?

Yeah, I did overlook that part Nathan, suiting a design to a specific budget. I still don't think this is a bad idea, though.

The way I see it is that you do occasionally get the everyday person come up with an idea that is actually better than the one that ends out getting created. Hell, you needn't look further than the ideas mentioned in this forum alone for some decent and sustainable ideas for buildings, designs, parks, etc. I dunno, I like to think something like holding a design competition open to students of Adelaide Uni, or perhaps open to architects and designers from South Australia alone would be kinda cool. I thought the thing they did with the RAH site was a great idea, personally (although I'd have done it differently) :P

A mate reckons that construction on this building began today. Can anyone confirm? Did not get a chance to drive past at all.

Would be awesome if it has!

Skate part being closed for a few weeks whilst site testing/surveying being undertaken:

(apologies for the cardinal sin of a facebook link! - text as follows)

City of Adelaide

The City Skate Park will temporarily close from tomorrow, 11th of August, until 8th September 2014.

The closure will provide access to the adjacent site to enable site testing and survey to occur ahead of The University of Adelaide building and construction works expected to commence soon.

During the closure, the University of South Australia will also conduct survey and testing works on the City Skate site to ensure this is the only closure during Adelaide City Council’s lease period.

City Skate Park will reopen on completion of the site survey and testing, and remain open until February 2015 when Adelaide City Council’s lease expires.

Adelaide City Council continues to work closely with the State Government to confirm a suitable location for the new skate park.

Breaking new ground for the $206m Adelaide Uni Medical and Nursing school building

http://twitter.com/UniofAdelaide/status ... 00/photo/1
Construction has officially begun today on the biggest capital works project in the University of Adelaide's history - the new $206 million Medical and Nursing School building in Adelaide's West End.

The occasion has been marked by the turning of the first sod at an event involving the Hon. Jay Weatherill, Premier of South Australia, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham, representing the Federal Government, the Hon. Kate Ellis, Member for Adelaide, and staff and students of the University of Adelaide.

The new Medical and Nursing School building will house teaching and learning facilities for students and staff adjacent to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

When completed, the 13-storey building will also make the University of Adelaide the largest research presence in the State's Health and Biomedical Precinct at the West End.

"This state-of-the-art building will house some 1500 medical and nursing students and will take our research strength in Adelaide's West End to over 1100 people," said the Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Warren Bebbington.

"The new Medical and Nursing School building will be a place of quality medical and nursing training, higher learning and discovery, and it will result in new generations of brilliant health sciences professionals."

Professor Bebbington thanked the Federal Government for its generous support of $60 million towards the new building, and the South Australian Government for the land on which the building is being constructed.

"We are pleased that the Federal and State governments share our vision for an integrated health sciences precinct at the West End, bringing together patients, clinicians, teachers, students and researchers in a single location, for the benefit of the community," Professor Bebbington said.

Went past it yesterday morning. The hoardings are up and the site has a one of those weird gated entrances that the VUE on KW also has. Couldn't see anyone on site, but it was about 9am on a Sunday morning.

As at Sat 27th of Sept there is nothing happening on site .The only "construction" was the erection of the temporary fence and scaffolding over the entrance . The skate park has reopened and was in use.

The skate park is the UniSA site, not this building. It was only a temporary closure for soil testing.

Picture taken 9 Nov 2014. A piling rig and associated crane are now on site. I still think the convention centre building in the back ground is unnecessarily complicated and clumsy.

One of our ugliest buildings, horrendous. Atleast this and UniSA medical buildings should cover a large amount of it up.

Still though, it shits all over that ugly gap down to the trainline...
