Well I reserved judgment... now that the protective covering is off and the hoarding removed, I judge this stainless steel(?) dishrack as a bit lack lustre. I'm hoping it contains interesting lighting so it will at least be interesting at night.

In other places, all the main hoarding has been removed from the re-paving efforts, with only a few pockets left on that job. The seating is being installed in the last sections. The job's about 90% complete. Just the finishing touches and catenary lighting to go.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

I tend to agree, the roof looks impressive. Whilst I'm no engineer, I feel they could have lost the thinner poles, and lowered the (North Tce) end of the shelter to make it blend more.

A couple of bits about the catenary lighting:

- negotiations continuing with one particular building owner for the fixing points to their building
- won't be complete until early 2015 now (due to Christmas trading)
- the western column will "sit among the pigs"

The lighting in the canopy is pretty basic at the moment not that interesting.

I raise the question again... Does anyone know what's happening with Charles Street (next to Adelaide Central Plaza), it still hasn't been treated to new paving and looks like the old mall... Seems to have also become a dumping ground for all the old mall planter boxes...

Also, I question why they didn't incorporate more of the northern end of Gawler Place into the mall redevelopment, could have paved over some of the excess roadway and moved the canopy out of the mall and further into Gawler Place; or even could have built a new visitor centre there.. Wasted opportunity.

Is that a bus stop? If so I think it's quite impressive.

Gee that large blank cream wall...surprised nobody has bitched about it yet.
It's too bad there's some ugly heap of metal shit in the way now, otherwise that would be a great place to whack up an electronic light display of some sort.

I like that idea. But yes, it would be broken up by the canopy.
cheers,

Never thought I would say this... but I want the old canopy back.

It was certainly much better than this.

Really disappointing effort from the design team here. They have just replaced what was there with another version (albeit more linear) of what was already there. Bit of a waste if you ask me, and the end doesn't really justify the means. Whats more, it doesn't even look like it will be rain proof...?

It's not about the utility of the thing. It was used over the previous school break and serves its function. It's about the aesthetic of it.

It doesn't harmonise with its surroundings at all (sore thumb) so it looks out of place. For something to do this and win it needs to be an interesting design itself. It also fails there. The supporting poles are out of proportion with the structure. They've attempted some kind of contrast with the poles by making two fatter and out of alignment with the thinner ones. But that just looks odd. The roof itself is almost interesting, but up there on those poles plonked squarely in the mouth of Gawler Place North it just doesn't work.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Yes, I think it's the poles that drag it down. That don't quite gel with the actual canopy. Had it been suspended off the buildings on either side, I think it would be much more successful - but given how much trouble they're having with building owners hanging the lighting I imagine that would have been a pipe dream. I'd have perhaps articulated the edge slightly as well, so that they're not all flush.

Agree about the utility of this thing, as it will probably serve its purpose, but far out... I don't usually like to air unmitigated negative opinions, but this is f**king horrendous. The day the previous canopy went up, I called that f**king horrendous, too. They're both as bad as each other. Neither blend(ed) into their surroundings whatsoever. I cannot for the life of me imagine how any sane person would think this or the previous canopy were a good idea from a design perspective. A huge fail in the face of what is otherwise a magnificent Mall upgrade.
