Hmmm... The Hills Proposal appeared to extend out to that little side road all the way, as does this one. The renders at least make it look like the Hills site was planned to be a little deeper than Vue. Still though, you can't imagine they'd leave a great deal of empty space between it and the carpark behind it.

I guess this could also be the way that the building sits. The Vue building according to the picture below shows that after the first 5 or so levels, that the main portion of is set inwards, with a balcony looking thingy (the name eludes me atm). This may give off the impression that it's not as deep as the Hills renders shown below that.

To answer your question Skyliner, it looks like it doesn't, but it probably does. :P
Phantom, thanks for the info. Essentially that was what the conclusion I had in mind was - but still somewhat vague and hard to substantiate.

As at 2 Oct 2014 work is proceeding on digging out the basement. A crane base is being set up. Currently it is sitting on a large re-inforcement cage which will be formed up an concreted in so the actual cane will be a week or 2 yet. The picture quality is not good looking into the sun during the afternoon peak.

With the exception of Adelaide oval and Adelaide airport this is the best development in the
last 10 years.

It might be best to ask someone like bm7500 if he knows of how far this one actually extends? He posted in late August that he works on the other side of the carpark behind it. He'd have a much better idea than my retarded assumptions. :P

Ghs, I have six letters for you.

S.A.H.M.R.I.

I mean, this one is awesome to see coming along and everything, but the SAHMRI has to be included into that list... And maybe if you want to open up what qualifies as a development in the last 10 years, the new RAH and South Road Superway would probably also be worth a mention...

Phantom I have 8 letters for you :

BULLSHIT

How can you say that a 6 level building such as SAHMRI is better then this.
How can you say that the south road superway is as exciting as this development.

The SAHMRI architecturally is magnificent and from what I've read helps bring Adelaide to the very forefront of Medical Research in the Southern Hemisphere. If that is indeed the case, then it's a huge boost! Subsequently, the thread on SA about it has seemingly been filled with positives. Okay, it might not be 90 metres tall, but does that mean that the Vue building is less exciting than the rather tired State Bank/Santos/Westpac House building? That's got some 35 floors and is about 130m tall.

The Superway is a key component into creating a North-South Motorway in Adelaide that also bypasses the city. The Superway is the first elevated roadway in the state and the very magnitude of such an infrastructure project is so huge. It's the largest project of its kind that I can think of that has happened within my lifetime.

To me, those two are far more exciting for Adelaide than this one.

Ghs, I'd like to return the ball into your court and ask, what's so exciting about this? I'm all for it, don't get me wrong. But I feel obliged to play the devil's advocate here (I really am all for this project, I can't stress that enough) and ask, does Adelaide really need another building for accommodation purposes, especially in a rather barren part of the City?

Phantom is totally right
The SAHMRI is a place of world prominence in medical research. Vue is great but I wouldn't call it the world prominence as you may think it is.

You're wrong, it's quieter yes but not so barren. It's got a lot of access to various places seeing as it's got a free tram across the road. Theres a few nice cafes around that area as well.

I think it's a matter of personal opinion as to what is exciting. They are all important for their own reasons.

How are parts that are quiet and have little activity supposed to change if nothing is developed in those areas?
It's precisely through this sort of development that parts of the city will become more active and 'alive'.
If there are little to no people living in an area, or working in an area by day, then there is a slim chance any retail/food outlets will open up.

You do know what it means to play the devil's advocate, right? :P

So I used the word "barren". I also wrote that reply at 4:00am. Hahaha. But I do stand by the fact that this area has a lot less going for it than other areas around town at the current time, in this current climate.

Of course. I'm more than happy to hear others opinions, and I'm glad you're all hearing mine.

Rev, I do agree that accommodation is extremely important for tourism/migration, but I can definitely also see the importance sustaining the precinct areas we have, and bringing more money and people into these areas. We have a large shopping precinct along Rundle Mall and Rundle St, but apart from Crowne Plaza (and the recently opened Ibis Hotel), there isn't much around in the way of high rise accommodation on the eastern side, and I struggle to think of a large scale set of apartments around here.

Some could argue that this area is too far away from the main CBD and that a building of this height and quality would be better served on a road such as Flinders St or Franklin St. It would be right in the heart of Adelaide's business district and is only a stones throw from the retail areas. Perhaps more effort should be placed into maximising the already thriving areas in the city or by creating new areas that adjoin the already existing ones . Something like the northern portion of Frome St would be a reasonable example. It joins up with the University/Education areas, it would probably help boost Rundle St and it's very accessible to Rundle Mall.

I do feel that this isn't going the way I'd thought the conversation had. I was trying to point out that while this is a huge development for an area of the city that I'd love to see thriving and tall, that the general consensus from Adelaideans would be that the development of a medical research facility, backed up by an on-site hospital and no less than two different medical schools would be of much, much higher importance on their radars.

Ghs, I'd normally wait for a reply before retorting with something, however I just thought up something about this sentence.

Let's come back to this post in 5 or 10 years and see which building, this one or the cheesegrater makes it onto more Adelaide postcard pictures. :P

Phantom - you say that this part of the city is barren. Vue will liven up the city south
area and make it more vibrant. We also have New Mayfield starting soon in the same area.
Hopefully will also see more cafes, restaurants and bars down near south terrace.

We are currently seeing significant development in the city south and city west areas
which makes the Adelaide CBD more diverse.

This building will also improve the Adelaide skyline, if you read through the forums on this
site everyone wants taller buildings in the city.

It is quite barren! Not much is happening outside of King William down south.

As I mentioned before, it could be argued that the next major precinct to come up around Adelaide would be better positioned a lot closer to the major centres for business, finance and retail in the CBD. It's probably more convenient for accommodation buildings around Adelaide to be based around these areas and not down the other end of the city. I know the tram is right outside, but I know that if I were living in the city, I'd rather walk a few blocks than tram it.

But yeah, 5 years, Rev. We will see which one is more loved by Adelaide. :P
