[COM] Re: U/C: New Royal Adelaide Hospital | $2.1b
Another worker injured on the site.
And while the site was down it was all over the radio that its behind schedule because contractors found unknown soil contamination, but the gov. says it'll open on time.
Wouldn't surprise me if there's more work stoppages.

Re: site remediation.
Unfortunately there are many sites across Adelaide where in days gone by (some insist on referring to them as the 'good old days') there was zero concern or regulation of the use of long-lasting chemicals or dumping of pretty nasty stuff. We (often being the taxpayer) are now absorbing the cost of someone making easy money in years gone by...
If anything, I'm surprised there aren't more 'outraged' citizens given the number of housing developments on the like built on old industrial sites / gas manufacturing / wasteland.

I know at nearby housing developments(Brompton etc), they buried the contaminated soil somewhat deep and brought in clean soil and compacted it on top. Not sure how good a measure that is, eventually you'd think the contamination would seep to the top?phenom wrote:Re: site remediation.

What has been done about the contaminated soil at the new RAH site?
Even more concerning I'd say is what they do with asbestos once it's removed from old buildings. From my understanding it's basically dumped out Strathalbyn way. Not sure what they do with it once it's dumped.
Could be of concern depending on what happens to the old RAH and how much asbestos lies within.

Hi all,
its been a while and the photos are aged by over a month, but i visited Adelaide in November and was able to get a tour of the new RAH construction site with a friend who works on site. The photos i took whilst on the tour show an area of the hospital from a western facing entrance and into the morgue chambers, infectious disease treatment facilities, quarantine rooms, then up to the patient care wards, kitchens, and some views of the hospital court yards and city views from one of the six towers. The interior is absolutely immense, it is very easy to get lost within its confines. My onsite mate was saying back in Nov, that up to 70% of the interior ward sections are completed and are now just closed off and waiting for finalization work.

Welcome to the forums and hopefully your time in Adelaide was fantastic!

No worries Phantom, glad i can contribute in some way.
Was in Adelaide for only 6 days, and seriously wanted to cram in as much new architecture sight seeing as possible (hadn't seen the new Oval, the Samhri or the Superway in person either) so getting a look inside the hospital was a treat.
I grew up in Adelaide, and was always curious whether we would emerge as a global player on the front of architectural growth from our sleepy, comfortable state of affairs. I found a link to the forum whilst browsing on skyscrapercity.com and haven't turned my back.

Thanks for the 'scoop', H1ghlife. Interesting to see some of the undressed features before this is completed.

Awesome work here! Still hoping there will be a guided tour of the entire complex when it's completed!
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

Something copper-like the treatment they've given on the new Adelaide Oval / Convention Centre would have been a better choice IMO.
It's looking really nice on the back side now and good at the front also.
Interesting that this project is the largest infrastructure project in the state's history but there's hardly
any discussion about it on this forum

There is not much to discuss when a project moves so slowly over a 5-year period! Im sick of looking at it, just get the damn thing built already so people can stop complaining about it!
