[COM] Uni of Adelaide - Med School | 70m | 15lvl | $120m
[COM] Re: #U/C: Uni of Adelaide - Med School | 62m | 13lvl | $120m
I would presume that the internal fit out for a med school would be much more expensive than that of an apartment building, hence the higher cost of construction.

Yes, and of course the floor plate on this versus something like Vue is massively different too.Mants wrote:I would presume that the internal fit out for a med school would be much more expensive than that of an apartment building, hence the higher cost of construction.
Given the intended use of this building, including dental facilities for access by the public, I'm not surprised the costing is a bit non-standard.

I'm making no comment on whether they should have the prominence they have or not, but it's definitely eye opening to actually have a good look into just how many of the office buildings in the city are operated by universities - most notably Adelaide Uni as you would expect.rev wrote:Just how much more of the City are our universities going to take over?
That said, it's probably better than yet more State Govt related office accommodation!
It's my understanding based on random scuttlebutt that this new med school will still not be enough to co-locate all relevant facilities, schools and researchers so...

I think it is the facade that makes it look like a car park although it had to be pointed out to me to see it. I thought the original renders looked quite striking, applying what appeared to be the aesthetic of railway junctions worked well in with the nearby train station.
As for the cost, yep, the internal fit out would cost a fortune. I occasionally joke with patients who ask about the price of medical equipment that being used for medicine automatically jacks up the price, and that the only way it'd be more expensive is if it were used for a wedding... most people don't get it...

A crane base has been installed in the centre of the site on the North Tce side so a crane is not far off
[COM] Re: Uni of Adelaide - Med School | 62m | 13lvl | $120m
Only one? I thought this would easily have a second! Its so freaking wide.
[COM] Re: Uni of Adelaide - Med School | 62m | 13lvl | $120m
Judging by the crane base, it'll be a large capacity electric crane (similar to what is being used at the RAH site) and a single long boom hammerhead would suffice here.
[COM] Re: Uni of Adelaide - Med School | 62m | 13lvl | $120m
The crane is going up this weekend I believe. Should be at least 5 more going up in the CBD
over the next 6 months.

There is no action on putting up the crane today??

Sorry it looks like I got it wrong. Shouldn't be far away though.EBG wrote:There is no action on putting up the crane today??

Tried getting onto North Terrace from West Terrace today and it was blocked off. Does this crane have anything to do with it, or was the road closure for the Hospital? North Terrace was open westbound up to about the Morphett St bridge, I think.

In urban planning terms, the change in use of the area of Parklands west of the Morphett St bridge and North of North Tce from 'Parklands leased to transport' to commercial and government multi level has saved the state government a lot of money, the Parklands being a free development site, but it has radically altered the design of the city.
No longer is Adelaide a square mile within encircling Parklands, it is now three sides of a square with a variable northern edge abutting the river.
North Terrace should now be renamed North Road or North Street. 'Terrace' implies a view, and there is no longer a view from North Terrace, except along it.
I don't object to the building of new hospital facilities, but I object to the appropriation of Parklands to build them on, and I object to the loss of the fundamental form of the city.
I like former Mayor Harbison's idea of a hugely expanded Torrens Lake in the area where the new development is taking place.
There is plenty of room elsewhere to build the medical and other facilities. The government would just have to pay for it.

Sorry to pop your theory stumpjumper, but adelaide has not been bounded by North terrace for well over 100 years now.! Some small little structures like,... Oh, government house, parliament, uni, railway station, hospital. So why is covering ugly rail yards with functional buildings such a crime?

I believe the 'parklands' bounding North Tce were always meant to be used for civic buildings. Even the original map of Light's depicts areas for Government House and barracks. (And a hospital where Rundle Park is now).
