Agreed. While I love the building, i'm not sold on the location. Not real keen to see a building towering

Disagree with both of you. It is not the wrong location. Apartments are best suited where there's shopping and entertainment, not around office buildings. In this building there seems to be good contrast between old and new. It is not overpowering and seems to complement its surroundings. Old small well-designed buildings of character will always standout, like Ruthven Mansions. However if your preference was for a skyscraper with the same characteristics of what is already there, I doubt very much you'd even notice what was heritage or not.

Towering over Rundle Mall? It's around 40m set back from Rundle Mall. It's a 90m building, not a 400m skyscraper.
This is the perfect location for a residential building to go up.
Close to the mall, close to rundle street, close to the universities.
You wouldn't have trouble renting out an apartment in a building like this close to the universities to international students for example.

Victoria Square is predominantly office buildings, courts with the odd hotel. What reason does a residential building have in amongst that? On the outskirts of Vic Square sure, Gouger street and the markets are a draw card.

And buildings that say "fuck you" is what Adelaide needs to help break the conservative stranglehold on our city and state.
We need to be bold and daring and break the stereotypes.
Or do you prefer more bland, boring boxes? Perhaps in a beige colour..

Going through the old thread, an old post of Will's, and the development application, it's great to see that the development will retain the facade of Assay House. It's a little gem of a building.

I totally disagree with the idea of heritage conflict. With it's position, you'll barely be able to see the thing from street level in front of the heritage buildings. From further distances it will just be another part of the already varied North Terrace landscape.

It's called Jay derangement syndrome. Apparently our current Premier according to the 'hardcore' commenters on AdelaideNow is barely one step removed from the world's worst dictators. Regardless of one's personal political beliefs, it's just insane to ascribe everything that happens to a government plot' especially when it's something as clearly unresourced and benign as the SA Government.

On topic though - why does AdelaideNow insist on these 'second tallest' type articles. They did the same with Vue. Number of floors does not equal height, especially when comparing residential (low floor heights) with commercial. At least in this case they included competing proposals, past and present, with heights which at least for the more literate AdelaideNow readership would clearly indicate this building in no meaningful way would be 'just two floors' lower than Westpac House in anything other than name.

I definitely look forward to maybe seeing some more realistic renders to see how the gold stuff might look but I think this one might just become quite the beauty if and when built.

Just saw the comments on the Advertiser Facebook page.

"Shouldn't we have more hospitals?"

"I don't want to go into the city with all these residential buildings, we need more money for entertainment precincts."

These comments were common from what I saw. But disheartening to read, especially since this is not government funded. We need more people to live in the city in order to improve the entertainment available in my opinion. I think this building would be a great asset to our city.

I would rather the Advertiser not mention any new development either on their website nor Facebook. Some people are acting like the Government is planning on building a 90-storey apartment block next to the mall.

That article also had a negative vibe to it.

Pretty hilarious that someone thinks we're turning into a mini New York when we haven't had a new tallest in 27 years now.

And then the comment about it not being progress, so they will oppose it. Because private investment, an increase in confidence in the market and job creation is not progress.

Luckily that poll indicates that about 91% of people at least like it. Just a case of the vocal NIMBYs at work. I just don't understand why they can't respect that maybe other people like living in high density skyscrapers. It's not like anyone's stopping them living on their quarter acre blocks of suburbia. Screams of "my way or the highway".

Oh well, it's not like their negativity will stop the development.
