Pretty sure there's more to the building than what you can see in those renders, given it will contain:
— A large multi-purpose hall for graduations and additional events
— Multi-purpose playing courts for many sports including basketball, netball and indoor soccer
— Fitness Centre incorporating a weights room and exercise equipment
— Swimming pool
— Public art and exhibition space.

No way can a "1 level inverted triangle" accommodate all that on that size lot.

And it's with this that I think Will's comments of the ground level building's appearance are unreasonable. My understanding is that the facilities you mentioned above will all be underground and involve part of Hindley Street being dug up for the works. For structural reasons, I'm sure this is why the high-rise buildings is set back from the street to factor in how deep this development will go.

I guess the key is the "1 level" (even though it looks to be 2 or 3 and is meant to have an underground component too) but whatever, dont let the facts or the potential design merit get in the way of its lack of height

What do engineers have to do with the design merit of the building? Isn't that the job of the architect, obituary resider?

Will's entitled to his opinion on this development, as are the rest of you. I do remember him having a go at me and some others last year because we thought that 203 North Terrace proposal was generic and ugly, but that's not a reason to have a go at him for stating a disagreeing opinion. He never said that low-rise, environmentally sustainable buildings are a bad thing and that this proposal MUST be a high rise for his approval, it's just that this particular proposal at this particular point in time looks underwhelming to him from an aesthetic point of view (ignoring the building's amenities).

I'm fairly indifferent to this proposal to be honest. Admittedly, I don't know much if anything about this area, or if this sort of building is really an underwhelming wasted opportunity. I will likely never go past it, but it doesn't look particularly jaw-droppingly beautiful at the moment. It just looks like a nondescript shape of what the building will look like. It might look nicer if we could see some better renders, so I won't pass any real judgement on the building at the moment.

That said, it has an interesting shape which should add some variety in the area and the amenities seem pretty nice.

Noticed this little bit:

So the accommodation tower that was part of the original plan for the great hall, is now a separate project elsewhere on Hindley St.

Article in the Tiser today says this accommodation "tower" will house 400 beds and work will start later this year. Any info anywhere on height etc?

I have a feeling the building will be around 25-30 stories. If you consider 400 rooms, working on the basis of 15 apartments per floor + lift cores + circulation space, that works out to be 27 stories + ground level.

It isn't a big site either. It could be even taller.

Accommodation tower to start this year, i was under the impression it was a couple of years away. I would imagine it would be 12-15 levels.

Also, a new skate park has opened recently on Oaklands Road near the wetlands, I didn't manage to get any photos of it unfortunately.
