80 apartments being greater than 50% of Adelaide CBD's demand.......pffffffttt!!
I would think a sensible estimate of Adelaide's CBD apartment demand to be more around 400-500 in the current climate.

I am in the industry and the widely accepted average over the past 3 years has been 240 per annum, It seems that Sandy's statistics are as flawed as his city planning credentials.
And as a side note, who votes this idiot in?

Probably his fellow NIMBY's who kept him in for so many years. I could not be happier that Mob are slowly being phased out, him and Moroan are next!

And bring back Yarwood too, while we're at it.
Haese is such a lame duck mayor. What has he even done these past six months? I've not heard one iota from him.
Anyways, back on topic.

I have stayed in the Crown Plaza twenty times or more, It is not a 5 start hotel. Maybe 4.5 but definitely not 5. Nice hotel though as it has be my location of choice over the last few years. Will wrote:P.S. why does the media keep repeating that this will be the first 5 star hotel built in Adelaide in 30 years? Have they forgotten about the Crowne Plaza, which opened in 2010? Even then, the Playford on North Terrace was only opened in late 1998.
On topic, this new development looks great.

Like it or not we're going to skew further towards a service-based economy and having attractive destinations in the city (read: not completely hitching our wagon to regional attractions) like hotels, sporting venues and convention centres are important to support that. Plus you'd hope a decent chunk of the money being spent to build these things enters circulation.
Change is gradual, challenging and can be painful for many, but spending too much time lamenting the loss of old-world industries is akin to only constructing 18 floor buildings because "thats what we've always done".
ghs wrote:Rev, it's more then just a few buildings going up in the city. Over the next 3 years we're looking
at 10 - 15 buildings of at least 55m in height. This represents about $1.5 billion dollars of
investment.
It is a good sign.Honey of a City wrote: Seems the developers have plenty of confidence in Adelaide's future. Pity more Adelaideans can't see it.
But our economy still stinks. And 15 new buildings wont change that. Better economic policies will though.

These councilors get elected because of who votes. Council voting isn't compulsory. Whose the most vocal? The nimby groups. They are a minority but manage to get their councilors in almost always.
We have S-A which gathers most of us and most if not all info about most and major devs. What is lacking is a group or an organized effort to actively counter the nimby movement which gets plenty of actual media attention for their cause. These people are given air time and quoted in the papers. They are given the opportunity to present their views and opinions to the wider community. Often if not always without a counter provided. Thus theirs is the only view put forward.
And as I showed with the Obahn extension the views these people put forward aren't necessarily correct or based on fact or reality.

In what is a positive step for this development, re-development works for Australian Fashion Labels new North Terrace headquarters are well under way.
[COM] Re: Currie/Rosina St | 110m | 32lvl | Sofitel
Would love to see another 4-5 storeys added to the apartment levels in this building, making it about 125m tall. Doesn't have to be as tall as Westpac House, but another tower close to it in height would make a significant impact on the skyline.
[COM] Re: Currie/Rosina St | 110m | 32lvl | Sofitel
Forgive me for asking what may be the blindingly obvious, but in assuming the connection here is that Australian Fashion Labels currently tenant the building that's to be demolished to make way for this proposal? Will wrote:In what is a positive step for this development, re-development works for Australian Fashion Labels new North Terrace headquarters are well under way.

Yes. As soon as their new HQ is completed, the development site "should" be vacant of tenants and demolition can commence.[Shuz] wrote:Forgive me for asking what may be the blindingly obvious, but in assuming the connection here is that Australian Fashion Labels currently tenant the building that's to be demolished to make way for this proposal? Will wrote:In what is a positive step for this development, re-development works for Australian Fashion Labels new North Terrace headquarters are well under way.

This one is being resubmitted. No further details yet as per height or design changes so a bit useless but just an FYI at this stage.

Well it says 32 level building for hotel, retail and residential, so I'd say they're finally getting on with it. Despite the loss of the nice building already on this site, I'll be happy to finally see this one go up.Ben wrote:Not sure if a new application entirely or they are applying for stage 1 (demolition).
