P.S. why does the media keep repeating that this will be the first 5 star hotel built in Adelaide in 30 years? Have they forgotten about the Crowne Plaza, which opened in 2010? Even then, the Playford on North Terrace was only opened in late 1998.

I have stayed in the Crown Plaza twenty times or more, It is not a 5 start hotel. Maybe 4.5 but definitely not 5. Nice hotel though as it has be my location of choice over the last few years.

Surely a 30+ floor hotel is a good sign for transitioning away from government protected manufacturing industries? These buildings are much more important than just their impact on the skyline.

Like it or not we're going to skew further towards a service-based economy and having attractive destinations in the city (read: not completely hitching our wagon to regional attractions) like hotels, sporting venues and convention centres are important to support that. Plus you'd hope a decent chunk of the money being spent to build these things enters circulation.

Change is gradual, challenging and can be painful for many, but spending too much time lamenting the loss of old-world industries is akin to only constructing 18 floor buildings because "thats what we've always done".

Rev, it's more then just a few buildings going up in the city. Over the next 3 years we're looking
at 10 - 15 buildings of at least 55m in height. This represents about $1.5 billion dollars of
investment.

Seems the developers have plenty of confidence in Adelaide's future. Pity more Adelaideans can't see it.

It is a good sign.
But our economy still stinks. And 15 new buildings wont change that. Better economic policies will though.

These councilors get elected because of who votes. Council voting isn't compulsory. Whose the most vocal? The nimby groups. They are a minority but manage to get their councilors in almost always.

We have S-A which gathers most of us and most if not all info about most and major devs. What is lacking is a group or an organized effort to actively counter the nimby movement which gets plenty of actual media attention for their cause. These people are given air time and quoted in the papers. They are given the opportunity to present their views and opinions to the wider community. Often if not always without a counter provided. Thus theirs is the only view put forward.
And as I showed with the Obahn extension the views these people put forward aren't necessarily correct or based on fact or reality.

Would love to see another 4-5 storeys added to the apartment levels in this building, making it about 125m tall. Doesn't have to be as tall as Westpac House, but another tower close to it in height would make a significant impact on the skyline.

Yes. As soon as their new HQ is completed, the development site "should" be vacant of tenants and demolition can commence.
