News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic
Re: News & Discussion: Road Issues & Traffic Congestion
This is the reason why public transport usage isn't as high as it should be for CBD commuting in Adelaide
If someone would recalculate those stats into per capita stats, it would be very embarrassing

Re: News & Discussion: Road Issues & Traffic Congestion
I think the needs of tradies, delivery drivers and couriers warp the argument. Of course they have a legitimate need to drive, but I highly doubt they make up any kind of significant percentage of traffic, especially at the peak times.claybro wrote:All points are valid, except there seems to be a perception, that spending money on a train will magically make cars dissapear from the roads. This is not the case due to the way Australian cities have evolved and as everyone has different travel needs. Case in point is here in Perth, where the Northern and Southern freeways were constructed with high speed trains in the median. Now during peak hour the freeway is packed, but so are the trains...they are at crush point. Adelaide could build another 3 train lines...it still will not resolve the need for tradies, delivery drivers, couriers, trucks, buses and yes commuters to use well planned well placed and uninterupted road corridors of which Adelaide have .....NONE. (yet)

Here is 5 minutes of the M2 motorway in Brisbane, they just spent 1 billion dollars in an attempt to ease congestion during peak hour. Looks like it did very little.

why is it embarrassing? it is what it is and just a reflection of they way the city operated in the past.jk1237 wrote:

With all due respect Nathan, I have to ask...do you drive around much during the day? I would suggest a large percentage of traffic in the day is commercial, or commercial related. How can this be warping the argument, when it is part of the same problem. Not all trade related journeys are in trucks and utes, which is why PT is only part of the overall solution.Nathan wrote:I think the needs of tradies, delivery drivers and couriers warp the argument. That argument can be made to make any statistic irrelevant. Obviously we need to look at the past in order to improve our future. What's your point?Waewick wrote:why is it embarrassing? it is what it is and just a reflection of they way the city operated in the past.

So what does that say about our city vs others? It is way too easy/cheap to take the car into the cbd so why even consider another option?

That's during the day. Whatever congestion problems we have, it's during commuter peak.claybro wrote:With all due respect Nathan, I have to ask...do you drive around much during the day? Fair enough. See realstretts' reply above: "So what does that say about our city vs others? Why can't some of you just accept that we need both better/more public transport and better road infrastructure?
No offence intended, but your attitudes and mentality are very similar to nimbys and appa members.

I agree with rev what rev is saying.
my point is that it isn't embarrasing, it is a fact of life.

Re: News & Discussion: Road Issues & Traffic Congestion
I agree with this too, but what is embarrassing about the figures in the survey is that here in Adelaide we are way too reliant on private vehicles. Yes it is a fact of life, but it is an embarrassing one.rev wrote: we need both better/more public transport and better road infrastructure
