Re: Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
Domino's used to be massively popular. For years its taste was rather unique. Pizzas were well-made, toppings generous and price was excellent. Then, a handful of years later, they sold out. Flavour quickly became commercialised and what made Domino's great, became second-rate (now there's a rhyming slogan for ya!).

Krispy Kreme opens on Port Road
The same can be said for Pizza Haven. It started in SA (with dine in as well as take away at their shop on the corner of Anzac Highway and Brighton Road) and became an international chain, but quality declined so much that AFAIK nobody really missed it when Eagle Boys took over their SA shops.
Eagle Boys pizzas were a bit better, but I haven't had one for a while. Can anyone tell me whether they still are?

Pizza Hut, Dominos, Eagle Boys, Marcelinas...I wouldn't even pollute my bins with that junk.

Standard operating procedure for this kind of business. Move in, offer better/cheaper than opposition's service, once established dial back costs by dropping to lowest common denominator. Most people are too lazy to realise that the quality has dropped and change their habits.ChillyPhilly wrote:Domino's used to be massively popular. For years its taste was rather unique. Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Looks like the one on port wakefield road is not far away from opening. Another
month or two I think. Looks pretty big, similar to the one on port road with
a factory included.

Re: Mt Barker / Nairne freeway interchange
They really need to curb the amount of OTR's before they are the only servos around.
In some areas there's multiple OTR's within minutes of each other. It's ridiculous. And these guys still claim to be the little guys the little Aussie battlers trying to stay afloat while the big corporates undercut them. Yehhh, right..the little Aussie battler drives a Rolls Royce, among a multi-million dollar fleet of luxury cars, and owns an entire street of mansions

Re: Mt Barker / Nairne freeway interchange
Go for a drive up Port Wakefield road, there's 3 petrol stations around the White Horse Inn, 2 are OTR and one is a Castrol. I think another OTR is going to be built at the Waterloo Corner intersection as well but don't quote me on that.rev wrote:They really need to curb the amount of OTR's before they are the only servos around.

They're going to be burned pretty badly when the northern Connector steals all the traffic from Port Wakefield Road

There's one (with a Krispy Kreme) being built next door to the Whitehorse Inn, and opposite another OTR.GoodSmackUp wrote:Go for a drive up Port Wakefield road, there's 3 petrol stations around the White Horse Inn, 2 are OTR and one is a Castrol. They also own the old go kart track on the corner of Waterloo corner and Pt Wakefield roads.
Re: Mt Barker / Nairne freeway interchange
there's a shipping container with an OTR Coming soon sign on it just north of that go kart trackmooshie wrote:They also own the old go kart track on the corner of Waterloo corner and Pt Wakefield roads.

Re: Mt Barker / Nairne freeway interchange
They will loose some traffic, but local and especially holiday traffic will still use it. Most traffic from the Eastern burbs eg Burnside, NPSP, Campeltown council areas will still use Pt Wakefield Rd if heading north, the Northern connector will be used by people from the West and South, it will be much more useful for freight movements then cars, of course cars will use it but it will remove a lot of freight movements from Pt Wakefield, Main North and Grand Junction Roads. If you ever go to Davoren Park look at the OTR there, it's busy as, not from through traffic but from locals, just don't make eye contact with anyone lol joke.GoodSmackUp wrote:Go for a drive up Port Wakefield road, there's 3 petrol stations around the White Horse Inn, 2 are OTR and one is a Castrol. Re: Mt Barker / Nairne freeway interchange
Completely agree with curbing OTR. When they bought out the remainder of independant Mobil and BP servos in Adelaide, I believe the government forced them to sell off a percentage to balance the market which is why you'll see a couple of OTR's have become Caltex/Star Shop (i.e. Marion and Cross Road(s)).
But that isn't good enough. Shell Australia are now on the market, what's to stop OTR from once again buying out the bulk of Adelaide's Shell Stations? Money speaks to government on all levels.
They've destroyed local business and brand equity all in the name of "giving back to South Australians". Saturating the Subway market, which has crumbled independent Subways (with minor exception to the CBD) and in-turn their inability to maintain quality of Subway products has put a bad name on the brand in Adelaide (worth mentioning that Subway have blocked OTR from purchasing further franchise licences to try and tackle this). They're now cutting their way into Oporto which have a similar franchising structure to Subway. And their introduction of Pie Face and Krispy Kreme's to SA has cut down local alternatives which they instead should be trying to encourage.
Furthermore, whenever an action group do stand up and opposed an OTR (mainly in regional areas such as Aldinga) the Shahin's create Facebook pages posing as a "supportive local of OTR" trying to make it look as though the public support the project. Seemingly, the only time an OTR hasn't prevailed is with a proposed Magill Road station (where Burger Foundry are now), which doesn't matter for them because they have three stores only minutes away.

Re: Mt Barker / Nairne freeway interchange
OTR is a sa success story. In most markets it is an interstate or foreign owned company that owns markets.
I am happy with having highly successful sa business's.
While the rest of the country is moaning that Woolworths and Coles are running everything, in Adelaide we can happily say that isn't the case.
As cities develop the small independents get bought out and the market consolidate. The best outcome is that the consolidated company is local.

Re: Mt Barker / Nairne freeway interchange
Try running a small business, say a deli or your own servo..and then see how long you can keep your business open when OTR decides to open up a store near yours.bits wrote:OTR is a sa success story. In most markets it is an interstate or foreign owned company that owns markets.

They might be successful, but they are predators and have done substantial damage to other local businesses. They do not go looking for new opportunities, eg opening up a servo where none exist. In most cases what they do is they open up where existing businsesses are with the sole intention of putting them out of business. They are trying to create as big a monopoly as possible.
On Torrens Road at Bromtpon across the road from the primary school there used to be a small deli(next to the chicken shop), that you could stop at on your way home. A small battler business. That deli was there for over 30 years, was open 7 days a week, and was a family run business.
A vacant lot became available a few doors down on the corner of Torrens Rd/Chief St. Guess who moved in? OTR with an Opporto.
The locals tried to petition to stop it, but the local council didn't care because the Shahins bring too much money to the table to swing things their way.
That deli is now closed and out of business.
On David/Kilkenny Tce, where the two original servos for the Shahins are. They renovated one of them, and have closed the other. In the renovated one they've put in a Wendys. There's a franchise Wendys in Arndale just up the road.
These people go out there with the intention of destroying other businsesses.(if you want to know how they started send me a PM because those posts get deleted).
You say it's a good thing that it's a local company. Try telling that to the countless small business owners who have been put out of business by the Shahins who come in an undercut them.
And what does it matter if it's the Shahins with their OTR, or Coles or Woolies? The end result is still the same. Small businsess gone, big business in.
Another idea for those who think the Shahins are some sort of Gods gift for South Australia...try working for them. Or if you aren't willing to take such a drastic pay cut and work under shit conditions, ask around there's plenty of people who have worked for them who will happily share with you the horror stories of what it's like to be employed by the Peregrine Corporation.
Anyway, how about that interchange?
