Tenders in, now to choose who’ll build Port offices
Staff from the Primary Industries and Regions SA fisheries and aquaculture division are to relocated from the city to Port Adelaide.
WORK will start early next year on a new government office in the Port, expected to create 275 jobs during its build.
Tenders for the construction of the building, at the corner of Nile and Robe streets, closed at the end of last month, with 12 companies vying for the works.
Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said the field of developer applicants would be narrowed over several months.
“Building and fitting out offices for about 500 public servants is a big project and especially for
the Port,” Mr Mullighan said.
“Many of those construction workers will frequent local businesses, providing an indication of
the kind of boost to the local economy that can be expected when the public servants occupy
the site.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to encourage growth and development in the Port with a new
building at a key site which will become a landmark for the town centre precinct.”
Mr Mullighan said the building should complement the heritage of the area and express “excellence in planning and design”.
Among those moving by 2017 will be up to 40 staff from the Primary Industries and Regions SA fisheries and aquaculture division, now based at Grenfell St in the city.
The State Government has yet to decide on other departments moving to the Port.
The Infrastructure Department would not name any of the finalists in line for the work, on land that is now used as a car park for Port Adelaide Enfield Council staff.
Mr Mullighan said the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure had proposed that during construction, council staff park on nearby land owned by Renewal SA.
“While discussions have been positively received, we await formal acceptance from the council,” he said.
Work on the office building was delayed because of disagreement between the council and government over how much the council should pay for car parking at the development.
Mr Mullighan said developers had been advised the council may look to lease car parks at the site.
Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson said the creation of 275 jobs was “excellent news” for the area.
“This with other things we are working on with the government will be the turning point for our area and job creation,” Mr Johanson said.
“We will be looking at options on car parking that will meet current and future needs, however there will be parking available in the new government building.”

So let me get this right... Filling newly built buildings in the Port whilst contributing to the vacancy rates in the CBD? Has anyone stopped to consider bringing new businesses to the Port? How about creating our very own Silicon Valley?

Patrick27, don't sneer at this idea, it has been used successfully interstate. The NSW government relocated several government departments out of the Sydney CBD to Parramatta to "kick start" development (commercially and residentially).Patrick_27 wrote:So let me get this right... Whilst I doubt Port Adelaide will see the sort of proposals that are currently on offer in Parramatta (40 storey apartment buildings) I believe adding 300 (or so) public servants to daily Port Adelaide life will only add to the revitalization of the area.

BOUTIQUE apartments would be built inside one of the Port’s most prominent buildings under $2 million plans to reinvigorate the landmark site.
Property developer Michael Mangos has lodged plans with Port Adelaide Enfield Council, Transport SA and Heritage SA to complete a revamp of the old Port Adelaide Institute building.
Under the plans, six luxury two-bedroom apartments with balconies and views over the Port would be built inside the St Vincent St structure, which has been vacant for more than a decade.
The building will have apartments over three floors, and a rooftop barbecue area.
Work is expected to start on refitting the building later this year if the council’s head planner gives designs the green light.
Mr Mangos said the building would be completely revamped and “returned to its original beauty” on the inside and outside.

Good to see that there's also plans to demolish the Fishermen's Wharf Markets.
Seems like an under-utilised piece of land - the markets are only open on sundays and
yet the land would be worth a lot as it's right on the water. Surely the owner would get a
better return by selling it off as townhouses or apartments.

Wait, hold up. Wasn't the Quest going to be on the other (eastern side) of the market shed on that large patch of dirt? I recall the renders originally showing this.
IMO, if they want to improve the Port, how about rebuilding the ugliest bridge in the southern hemisphere?..

Agree with Patrick, there is nothing redeeming about that bridge.

Here is a crazy idea, maybe the Birkenhead Bridge could be closed to road traffic and make it pedestrian/cyclist only, there are 2 other bridges for cars to use to get across the River, plus the speed on the other two is 20km/h faster and the road surface much smoother.
