Not asking for sake of vanity, instead what will help generate positive stories, more tourists, maybe even more business? It's the vibe...

The completion of Victoria Square, amazing riverbank precinct and a dazzling city skyline.

The 'vibe' is improving, but Adelaide needs a sexy modern skyline to match the changes on the street level. 123 Flinders, VUE, Sofitel and other current proposals would help achieve this for the short term. As would a couple of 150-200m buildings

Adelaide Oval shortlisted for World Building of the Year

The Adelaide Oval redevelopment has been shortlisted for the title of World Building of the Year at the upcoming World Architecture Festival.



The redevelopment, by Cox Architecture, Walter Brooke and Hames Sharley, has previously been recognised with a number of other awards, including the Property Council of Australia’s Brian & Poulter Award for Best Tourism and Leisure Development.

More than 40 Australian projects are among the total of 338 shortlisted for the title of World Building of the Year, but the Oval is the only South Australian building recognised.

Senior associate and Adelaide studio leader for Cox Architecture Adam Hannon said the project’s short-listing in the sports category was testament to South Australian capabilities.

“I think the Adelaide Oval project shows what South Australia is capable of and what it can produce in relation to innovation and ingenuity to produce a built outcome that is world class,” he said.

Hannon believes the project’s short-listing is due not just to its physical architecture, but also the way in which it has transformed Adelaide as a city.

“We think one of the great successes of this project is not just the built form and the architecture and the interior, but actually in the way the public has engaged with the project,” he said.

“It is generally acknowledged outside of South Australia, in Australia and indeed the world that it has had a major impact on the city.

“It has been a catalyst in reviving the riverbank precinct and bringing crowds through the city on game day, and I think it’s that sort of change to the city fabric that’s been a big reason it has been short-listed.”

Hannon is confident the Adelaide Oval Redevelopment could take out the award in its category.

“It has set the bar very high in terms of what a sports building or series of buildings can provide,” he said.

“We certainly believe it’s a project that’s of the quality that could win; whether it will actually win will be something for the judges and the assessment panel to decide.”

The winners will be announced at the World Design Festival, which is in Singapore from November 4-6.

Great news! Now can we please do something with memorial drive tennis and create a truly world class sport Mecca. Moving the basketball out of that poorly located Beverly complex and into the city would just add to the momentum that the AO project has generated, and would give the otherwise low moral of the economy another boost.

Add Netball and live music to that mix. ETSA Park (not sure what it's called now?) is prime real estate for a Bowden style development (especially with a tram route expected to go through that area eventually and the existing train lines). As for live music, having worked in the live music industry interstate the venue just doesn't cut it; whilst the AEC has relatively good acoustics, it's adaptability to different event layouts and general facilities are inadequate, they should have never spent the $50m they did on upgrading the venue when it could have contributed to building a new multipurpose facility in the city.

Absolutely - make it a true sporting hub that will be a prime venue for basketball, netball, and hopefully get an ATP event back (or even WTA). Titanium Security Arena is being left to rot by it's current owners (you only have to look at the embarrassing state the antiquated scoreboard is in now to see they're putting zero investment in the arena), while Netball SA Stadium is starting to show it's age.

The café should provide an extra facility for locals and visitors wandering the northern side of the Torrens, crossing the Footbridge and visiting the Adelaide Oval/Bradman Museum and Oval Tours.

Toilet facilities are badly needed in the vicinity of AO to cater for the crowds/early birds (footy fans without reserved seats and SACA members) who line up for hours for AFL footy and international cricket events.

It's amazing how many people come to have a look at the Oval and how popular the AO Tours seem to be!

The recent day/night Sheffield Shield cricket match attracted quite a good and diverse crowd across the three sessions, with additional spectators (families, students, workers etc) coming in later in the afternoon/evening.

For sure. I went on one the other week (and I recommend everyone take it, it's an amazing tour), and there was about 50-odd people on the tour (they broke it up into 3 groups). If they get that for the three scheduled tour times each day that's about 150 a day that take a tour.

The Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority has announced that it will launch what will be a unique new tourism drawcard for South Australia – RoofClimb Adelaide Oval.

To open in March 2016, RoofClimb Adelaide Oval will see participants travel from the Western Stand to the Riverbank Stand on a purpose-built path, offering breathtaking views and a unique perspective of the city of Adelaide and its surrounds.

In a world-first, RoofClimb Adelaide Oval will include 16 seats as part of a Riverbank Stand roof deck, providing the chance to sit and relax while enjoying the spectacular views.

“In the two years since its reopening, Adelaide Oval has captured the world’s attention and imagination in a way few could have foreseen,” Adelaide Oval SMA Chairman John Olsen AO said.

“More than 2.5 million people have flooded through the gates and global audiences have tuned in to witness its continued success. Now it’s about to get even better.

“Seemingly everyone who visits the Adelaide Oval wants to admire its architecture, breathe its history, walk its hallowed turf, talk about it, photograph it, video it – and share it. RoofClimb Adelaide Oval will take that to the next level and will truly help to lift South Australia’s profile on the international stage.”

As part of the announcement, media were today given unparalleled access to the heights of Adelaide Oval and the chance to see where the route will take participants, including the location of a new bridge built to link the Western and Riverbank Stands.

For those seeking an additional adrenalin rush, a deck high above the southern goal square will provide the perfect place to ‘lean out’ over the ground – tethered only by a harness.

“We believe this is an incredibly positive initiative for South Australia,” said Adelaide Oval SMA CEO Andrew Daniels.

“The seated viewing deck is particularly exciting given it is a world first for this type of offering. To be able to take in the action from the heights of Adelaide Oval while an event is underway would be a truly unique experience; it’s certainly an opportunity we will be raising with all our venue hirers, including the sporting codes and promoters.”

A number of different packages will be available when RoofClimb Adelaide Oval starts operating in March 2016, including sunset and night time climbs. Prices will start from $99 for adults and $69 for children (aged 12-15 years).

The Adelaide Oval SMA has examined other similar operations, such as Up at the O2 in London and Etihad Skyline at Croke Park Stadium in Dublin, to ensure RoofClimb Adelaide Oval will provide one of the most amazing experiences in the world.

“It’s worth noting that the investment and all associated risks for this initiative lie with the Adelaide Oval SMA,” Mr Olsen said.

“We believe a significant opportunity exists within the soft adventure tourism market in Adelaide and we’re enormously excited about the potential benefits RoofClimb Adelaide Oval will deliver to South Australia.
