We’ll build it but you can use it too: prestigious private school association’s plans for the Parklands

A $2.5 million upgrade of sports facilities in the Parklands has been proposed by one of Adelaide’s most prestigious private school associations.

The Prince Alfred Old Collegians has plans to build the new change rooms, pavilion and public toilets in the area to replace two old existing buildings.

The new building is proposed for Park 9, off Mackinnon Pde, and be near a new playground set to be built by Adelaide City Council.

PAOC vice chairman Tim Hall said the development would be used for PAC students playing football, cricket and soccer but would also be open to the public when not in use for training or games.

“The pavilion will overlook (a new council playground) and parents will be able to sit under some shade on a hot day,” Mr Hall said.

“Prince Alfred College is part of the Parklands community and we want to give something back with these facilities.”

He said the new buildings would have a bigger footprint than the two it is replacing.

“We simply couldn’t build something that would meet modern standards within the old footprint,” he said.

“The design has taken into account the unique characterises of the Parklands and it includes a green wall and (large glassed areas) to make sure it doesn’t stick out.”

The Adelaide Park Lands Authority offered “in principle” support for the redevelopment, which would include a 21-year lease over the site with an option to extend.

But councillor Phillip Martin wants to examine all the current Parklands leases and said

clearer guidelines needed to be developed to ensure that there was a minimal amount of buildings.

“It seems that there is a constant stream of applications for new sporting facilities or existing ones to be refurbished in the Parklands,” he said.

“We need to make sure we actually have a proper policy for granting these leases because they are effectively predicated on the alienation of the Parklands, which are held by us in trust for all South Australians.”

But Councillor Anne Moran, who is a member of the Authority, said the process for the PAOC proposal was standard practice.

The plans will be put out for community consultation in October, with the public able to make a submission to the council.

TOPHAM Mall could become a festival venue and Pitt St could have a “theatre walk of fame” and nightly light shows as part of plans to reinvigorate pedestrian links to the Central Market.

Adelaide City Council has released its Invigorate Your Senses blueprint, which aims to build on “placemaking” projects trialled in Topham Mall and Waymouth, Bentham and Pitt streets for 18 months.

The plan comes as the $250,000 Sensing With Light interactive artwork is prepared for installation at the Currie St end of the mall this month.

Priority proposals include:

MAKING Topham Mall a “day and night food precinct”, possibly including a supermarket.

WIDER footpaths in Bentham and Pitt streets, and potentially making them shared zones or one-way streets.

MORE “parklets”.

OUTDOOR dining options for Waymouth, Anster, Bentham and Pitt streets.

GREEN walls, murals and other artwork on buildings across the precinct, which would host a regular schedule of entertainment and events.

A “theatre walk of fame” on Pitt St and nightly art projections on Her Majesty’s Theatre are among other proposals.

“The layout and design of Topham Mall will set it up to be a location for new celebrations, ranging from events to showcase the new microbrewery, to a place for buskers, to a new venue for a myriad of Adelaide’s festivals,” the plans says.

The council has set aside $500,000 this year for works related to the blueprint, including $200,000 on a “laneways masterplan” with Renewal SA covering the link from the market to the railway station.

Writing in Invigorate Your Senses, Lord Mayor Martin Haese said the best measure of success for Topham Mall — in the past viewed as a thoroughfare, not a destination — was attracting more people to enjoy it.

“I’d like to see people spilling out on to the footpaths, people enjoying an evening economy,” he said.

The ACC and the State Government are now in consultation mode for Stage 2 of the Hindley Street West road and footpath upgrade. This will see the same upgrade treatment given to Hindley Street between Morphett Street and Register Street.

I don't actually know, but would place money on that being a temporary banner.

It's a chain. The branding of the hotel has to follow their (admittedly rather bland) brand guidelines, and in lieu of completely redoing the signage, they've shoehorned it in to fit the existing signage.
