I guess it depends when the retirement home was built - standards were more lax back in the day. Plus, sites tend to get remediated based on the end use - e.g. a domestic dwelling with a garden which could potentially be used for planting vegetables would need to meet higher standards than a commercial premises without soft landscaping. Of course if the retirement home was built a long time ago then it may be that there were no standards for it to meet at all.

Either way it's just speculation at this point - there may be no contamination at the site...

I can only find a summary - have you managed to find any details about what was done back in 2005 - what the former use of the site was, what the source and extent of contamination was, what remedial action was taken etc? Would be interesting to know.

I love that others are now interested in this almost pointless story as much as i am.

4 days of work cost $250,000 with not a structure built.
I believe large amounts of soil was removed from the site and disposed of elsewhere. The site has been a large shallow hole for quite some time eg likely since 2005.

It just gets more odd this is the first excavation site and they are digging directly on this land and not any properties even adjacent it. Just seems like this soil needed to go before anything else got disturbed nearby.

Update on the Hawker/Hurtle Street intersection today:

The final design will include:

- The closure of Hurtle Street at the Hawker Street signalised intersection;
- A bridge at the Hawker Street signalised intersection over the North-South Corridor with provision for:
right turn in and out of Hawker Street into South Road
left turn in and out of Hawker Street into South Road

Pedestrian and cyclist connectivity will be maintained between Hurtle Street and Hawker Street.

The following traffic movements will be available:

- Northbound motorists on South Road (surface road) will be able to perform a u-turn onto the southbound carriageway (surface road) at the signalised intersection;
- Harriet Street will be opened to traffic allowing left turn in and out onto South Road;
- Croydon residents travelling east across South Road can turn left out of Cedar Avenue or Harriet Street and right into Hawker Street; and
- Croydon residents travelling west along Hawker Street across South Road can turn right onto the northbound carriageway (surface road) and left into Bedford Street.

Yes, definitely better. Still allows traffic to cross from Ridleyton to Croydon, but discourages through traffic doing so - as well as allowing people coming from Ridleyton to head northbound on South Rd. The pedestrian and cycling access is also much more streamlined.

Hooray, now they just need to add a provision for vehicles to u-turn at Port Rd (on the northern end of the intersection), and that will give many more options for vehicles leaving Ridleyton heading north and vehicles travelling south entering Croydon.

Anyone know why they aren't going under Torrens Rd as as well? They have bought/bulldozed quite a few properties after the intersection going towards Croydon Pk. Seems to be a relatively token cost compared to what they are spending to do it properly and finish it off.

Cost. Hopefully with the new leadership in the Federal Government we may see some extra funding to close the gap between T2T and the Superway.

It was never part of the T2T plan, just for the record. Instead, a wide median is being left along South Road for future projects.
